We haven’t won in the Sky Bet Championship since early January and, while there were positive signs in consecutive draws at Stoke City and Middlesbrough, last weekend’s reverse to Norwich City – the first of Rowett’s tenure – was a disappointment for us all.
That result leaves Leicester City inside the bottom three, one point adrift, with 11 matches still to play. Saturday’s test at Ipswich comes against a side chasing automatic promotion, but Rowett knows there is quality within his squad as we prepare for the trip to Suffolk on Saturday.
‘Be ready to kick on again’
Albeit still waiting for a first victory as Manager, former Foxes full-back Rowett has been enthused with elements of performances – and the squad’s response this week to losing out to Norwich.
“I know exactly what we’ve got to do and my role,” he told reporters on Thursday. “I was aware of some of the challenges when I came in.
“The first two games, we spoke clearly about how, in different ways, they were positive performances. We’re disappointed we didn’t win the first one. The second one was a little bit less so, but a good performance.
“The third game, I still look back at the game and I go: ‘Okay, we didn’t perform particularly well, but for 60 minutes there was not really much in the game’.
“For 30 minutes, I’d probably say it brought the situation to a little bit more of a heightened feeling. We need to make sure we’re ready to kick on again.
“For me, it’s just clarity all the time. I know what we’ve got to do. Knowing what you’ve got to do and doing it are obviously not always the same thing.
“But the players have been brilliant, they’ve trained really well, they’ve bounced back in terms of their energy and their feeling.
“I have absolutely no complaints about what we’re trying to do. We’ve got to try and put it on the pitch and equate that feeling into results. Of course, we know that at the moment.”
‘Go and compete’
Rowett wants his players to show what they’re about at Portman Road, backing their ability to return with a positive result, despite also knowing the quality in Ipswich’s ranks.
“They’re a really good side,” he added. “In some ways, since I’ve come in, three of the first four games have been against three of the in-form teams in the division. Middlesbrough, Norwich and Ipswich.
“I’ve managed against Kieran [McKenna], I know Kieran a little bit, I did my pro licence with Kieran many years ago. He’s a young, bright coach.
“He’s done fantastically well there. He’s got a team in his vision and a team that really want to work hard to open you up and want to run and have that energy and quality about them. They’re a well-drilled team, but we’ve seen it.
“We went to Middlesbrough and I think we’ve got the players that, if we believe and show what we’re about, we can go and compete in these games and cause teams a lot of problems ourselves.
“They’re a good side, got some good individual players, they’re a good team, and I think that’s something we’re working towards ourselves.”
‘A group that cares’
Rowett has been pleased with what he’s seen from the squad, application-wise, in training and now wants to see that translated into results – with a positive result at Ipswich.
“We’ve only been here just over a week,” he explained. “I want and would love to see – but I’m not expecting – incredible performances straight away in every single game.
“We’ve had two positive, one half not so positive. That’s fine, it gives me little clues, it gives me messages about what I think we need to do.
“Every game that passes that we don’t get a positive result, the feeling heightens a little bit as we realise games aren’t going to be here forever.
“But I don’t want to add that to that feeling. There’s no point me walking in and having a go at the players every single time. We still have to be constructive.
“I think the players were left after the game in no uncertain terms what I felt we need to do better in games, but I also see a clear desire to try and improve that themselves.
“There’s always an easy narrative that players don’t care, or are overpaid, but I haven’t seen that with the group.
“I’ve seen a group that cares and wants to do well that maybe is just not playing quite with the same freedom and confidence that good results and a better position in the table would help you to do.
“It’s the next game, that’s what we focus on, and we’ll learn again from whatever happens.”
