It's a 3pm GMT kick-off at Portman Road as we look to secure the points which could take us out of the bottom three, with this the first of our remaining 11 games of this 25/26 campaign.
In the lead-up to this clash, Dave Smith, who co-authored Of Fossils & Foxes, has once again equipped us with stats and figures to help us provide some historical context behind this match-up with the Tractor Boys.
Previous Encounters

We meet for the 76th time this weekend, renewing a match-up that began relatively recently by usual standards, in 1961, and has long been one of the more evenly balanced in our history. We now hold a narrow advantage in the overall record, with 28 victories to Ipswich’s 27, with meetings spread across the Premier League (and old First Division), the Championship and cup competitions. There are trends which offer a window into the histories of each too; from our double win over the Tractor Boys in the midst of our 10-game winning streak in 62/63, to periods of stalemate and narrow margins through the 1970s and 80s.
Recent contests, too, have been tight. The last five league meetings have produced three draws and two Leicester wins, the most recent a 3-1 success at King Power Stadium in December 2025 thanks to goals from Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Abdul Fatawu (from deep in his own half) and Jordan Ayew. That followed the 2-0 victory on the final home game of the 24/25 season, when Jamie Vardy marked both his 500th and final appearance for us with the landmark 200th goal of his Leicester career before Kasey McAteer – now with the Tractor Boys – added the second. Earlier trips to Portman Road have been equally tense, with both the Boxing Day 2023 and November 2024 clashes ending level. The broader historical record shows dramatic swings as well – Ipswich’s 6-1 win in 2002 being countered a decade later by City’s own 6-0 triumph – yet overall, these fixtures tend to be hard-fought, low-margin affairs.
Landmark Moments & Last Times

Pictured above, Frank Worthington’s hat-trick at Filbert Street in 1974 remains the only treble ever scored in this fixture. Spot-kicks have often played a part too, with David Nugent converting Leicester’s most recent penalty against Ipswich in 2012 and standing as the fixture’s top scorer overall with six goals. Own goals, meanwhile, have left their imprint across the decades, with an unusually high number recorded in this match-up. Four players – Malcolm Munro, Tommy Williams, Matt Heath and Leif Davis – have had the rare distinction of inadvertently scoring for both sides in this fixture.
Debuts have also featured prominently, from Kevin Farmer’s only-ever City appearance to the more memorable introductions of Gary McAllister and Steve Claridge, the latter famously sent out with his name misspelled on his shirt. Red cards have been shown seven times in total meetings, the last to a Leicester player being Patrick Kisnorbo at Portman Road in 2007, while Ipswich’s most recent dismissal came in November 2024 when Kalvin Phillips was sent off. In cup competition, the teams last met in the 1963 FA Cup and the 1997 League Cup, the latter decided by a single Mark Robins strike.
Played For Both & Top Scorers

The pathway between Leicester and Ipswich has been well travelled. Over the years, a long list of players have worn both shirts, including Matt Elliott, Chris Wood, DJ Campbell, Damien Delaney and Gareth McAuley. Others such as Marcus Bent (pictured), James Scowcroft, Richard Stearman, Martyn Waghorn and Sean St Ledger also contributed to both sides’ fortunes. In more recent times, players including George Hirst and Kasey McAteer have joined the modern generation to have crossed between the East Midlands and Suffolk.
The goalscoring honours in this fixture remain topped by David Nugent, whose six goals make him our most prolific marksman against Ipswich Town. For the Tractor Boys, former midfielder John Wark leads their chart with four goals.
