Born in Hereford in July 2004, football was a constant theme running through his life – his father, Tony, was a professional defender who spent two decades in the game representing Burton Albion, Newport County and Hereford United.
By the age of eight, meanwhile, Jordan was already starting his journey through Birmingham City’s academy, where his talent and dedication marked him out. Those journeys to the St Andrew’s club’s training ground became a routine sacrifice, but they paid off as he developed into one of the club’s brightest prospects.
His breakthrough came in November 2021, when, at just 17 years old, James made his senior debut in the Sky Bet Championship. He didn’t look out of place – calm in possession, strong in duels, full of energy.
Those traits helped him quickly establish himself as a player capable of influencing games at a high level, despite his tender age. The following season (22/23) saw him become a regular, trusted by his managers for his maturity beyond his years.
By the summer of 2024, on the other hand, he had amassed more than 100 appearances for Birmingham in league and cup competitions, chipping in with 10 goals from midfield and displaying the versatility to operate in deeper or more advanced roles.
Tracked by scouts from across Europe, Jordan became a midfielder who could combine athleticism with an eye for progressive passes. He was named Birmingham’s Young Player of the Season, and his performances also earned him international recognition. Having represented both England and Wales at youth level, James chose to commit himself to Wales at senior level, making his debut in March 2023.
That grounding in the Championship – a league where his experience could prove key again this term – gave him the perfect platform to take the next step.
In August 2024, he made the bold move to join French side Rennes in Ligue 1, stepping outside his comfort zone to grow in a new environment. While continuing to feature regularly for Wales, the locals in Rennes have already started to take notice. He made a total of 25 appearances for Les Rouge et Noirs in 24/25.
Still only 21, James’ story is just beginning. Now a Ligue 1 footballer with international caps, his next step is King Power Stadium – adding depth and ability to Martí Cifuentes’ options.
