The City pair shared their thoughts on the game after full-time
Sunday’s 1-0 win over London City Lionesses was the perfect way to head into the festive break, as we now sit ninth, with nine points at the halfway stage, and six above bottom-placed Liverpool. Against a formidable side, the game wasn’t without its drama, which saw Leitzig pull off a 95th minute penalty save to ensure all three points for the home side at King Power Stadium.
“It was great because I think we deserved the win today,” the German goalkeeper opened with. “We worked so hard, and it would’ve been disappointing if we conceded late on.
Leitzig pulled off a last-minute penalty save.
“So, I’m really glad I could make the save and keep the points but the whole team did so well.”
In-form goalscorer, O’Brien has netted three in her last four Barclays Women’s Super League appearances, also sweeping up the Player of the Match award, and the striker was delighted to get herself on the scoresheet but was full of praise for her goalkeeper’s heroics late on.
“I think it (the goal) went in, in slow motion,” O’Brien admitted. “I tried to get as much contact as I could on the ball, but I’m just grateful it crossed over the line.
O'Brien's second half goal proved to be the winning strike.
“I’m also grateful that Jani [Leitzig] was able to keep out the penalty late on to make sure the goal was the winning one.
“I’m glad I got something in the end, because I scored not long before that. It was definitely a better finish, but I’ll take the goal and the three points.”
