  • Leicester City and King Power sign agreement with the University of Leicester
  • Collaboration will support child health, education and professional development
  • New scholarships to help disadvantaged students in Leicester and Thailand
  • The LCFC Professorship in Child Health was launched in 2018
The agreement, which was signed in Bangkok this week, will see the three organisations work together across shared priorities, including children’s health, educational opportunities and staff development, while extending the impact of a Leicester-led research professorship into Thailand.
It also includes the launch of two new scholarship programmes - one for students in Leicester and one for students in Thailand - aimed at supporting young people who have faced hardship or disadvantage to access higher education.
Our Leicester City Chairman and Group Executive Chairman of King Power, Khun Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, met with University of Leicester President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nishan Canagarajah, in Bangkok on Tuesday to confirm the partnership.
Leicester City Chairman Khun Top, said: “Our partnership with the University of Leicester stretches many years and we are the only football club in the whole of the UK to fund a professorship at the University in child health. I am proud we are bringing this knowledge and resource to Thailand and, together, we will be dedicated to improving the health and well-being of babies born pre-term. We will build on this commitment to benefit communities in Leicester and in Thailand as well as creating new opportunities for learning at the University of Leicester.
“This MoU is a milestone in our partnership and honours the work begun by my late father. It signals our commitment to ensure that the power of education and of sport can have a transformative impact upon communities and upon people’s lives.”
President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, Professor Nishan Canagarajah, said:This is a proud moment - we are building a bridge between our countries thanks to the support of King Power, Leicester City Football Club and the Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation.
“We honour the legacy of the late Chairman of King Power and honorary graduate Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha as well as the support of his son, Khun Top, who is also an honorary graduate along with the club’s CEO, Susan Whelan.
“Together we are doing wonderful work in Leicester to improve child health and this agreement provides new opportunities to benefit communities in Leicester and Thailand. It also extends the University’s global footprint, ensuring that the research and education at Leicester has a truly international impact.”
A key part of the collaboration is the expansion of the Leicester City Football Club Professorship in Child Health, created in 2018 with the University of Leicester and University Hospitals Leicester. The role has led vital research into the long-term health of babies born pre-term and will now inform new projects focused on gestational diabetes and environmental health in Thailand.
The Club and King Power will also support two new scholarships as part of the agreement:
The Leicester City Football Club Scholarship, for students in Leicester from disadvantaged backgrounds
The King Power Scholarship, providing £5,000 towards tuition for Thai students to study at the University of Leicester
These awards form part of a shared commitment to widen access to education and ensure opportunities are open to all, regardless of background.
The University will also provide professional development support to King Power executives through business education and research programmes.
