Gary Rowett gives an update on our squad ahead of Bristol City (H) on Monday
Leicester City entertain the Robins with QPR also visiting King Power Stadium at the weekend
Goalkeeper Fran Vieites and winger Jeremy Monga picked ups injuries before Ipswich Town on Saturday
He also discussed the management of Ricardo Pereira's workload and his options at centre-back
With Asmir Begovic also out, goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk started in goal at Portman Road, but as Vieites picked up an issue late in the week, the substitute shot-stopper was youngster Harry French. Monga, meanwhile, also sat out the clash in Suffolk, having picked up a ‘little injury’ in the build-up. Louis Page, on the other hand, was not in the matchday squad, but the Manager confirmed that was a tactical choice, with experienced players – including Hamza Choudhury and Jordan James – returning to fitness this month. Aaron Ramsey, meanwhile, is in light training in Seagrave having not played since 29 December. “Fran twisted his knee [on Friday] so that was a blow for us, with Asmir out, in such quick succession,” Rowett said.
“Jez has a little injury as well. We’ll have to make sure we look after him. Louis, I felt for this type of game, I needed a little more experience on the bench.
“I’ve got Joe [Aribo] in there, JJ, Hamza, so three players who can go in the middle of the pitch. He’s a really good player, Louis, a lovely young player with great balance.
“At the moment, needs must at this stage of the season, so we’re going to have some of those decisions.
“Sometimes, it’s easier to go for experienced players that have gone through some of those battles before, but certainly he’s a player that’ll definitely get his opportunity.”
Ricardo Pereira, on the other hand, has started every game since Rowett’s appointment last month. The Portuguese full-back had previously been rested for midweek games as part of a phased return to fitness, but Rowett has revealed discussions with our captain himself have been had to manage his workload despite the increased playing time.
“I spoke to him before the Middlesbrough game and I was aware of that,” the Manager added. “He was coming back from injuries at that point.
“He wanted to put himself out there. He’s an experienced player. He’s our captain. He’s so important to us, but it's the same for anybody.
“We’ll make those decisions along the way. I like the fact that people want to put themselves out there. That’s really important.”
With Jamaal Lascelles an option at centre-back, but with Jannik Vestergaard yet to return from injury, there is experience in the middle of defence available to Rowett when the squad is fully fit. Eager to praise the back four who started Saturday’s trip to Ipswich, the 52-year-old expects several players, in all positions, to get an opportunity if it is deserved over the coming weeks.
He explained: “We have some experienced centre-halves who, of course, when you’re in this position, when you haven’t kept a clean sheet, you’re looking at those being available.
“You’re looking at: do we need to tweak one or two things? Because we can’t wait. We have to go and get clean sheets.
“I’ve got to be honest, I thought we defended really well [vs. Ipswich]. Luke was on a yellow card early. He defended brilliantly. The two centre-halves were fantastic.
“Rick had his hands full with two players on that side at times. I felt they defended diligently.
“Of course, that’s an order that ideally you want to keep the same, but I think we’re going to have to make some changes within all parts of the team to get the results we want.”
