King is overseeing preparations ahead of the Addicks fixture while the Club continues the process of appointing a new permanent manager and he has taken training this week.
Speaking to the media on Friday morning, the Premier League, Championship and League 1 title winner – all won during his playing days at Leicester City – spoke about his approach to this week and his thoughts on Nathan Jones’ Charlton.
‘It all comes down to the game’
King has been enthused by the reaction from the squad to his messages in Seagrave, praising the group for buying into his ideas.
“It’s been really good,” the 37-year-old said. “I couldn’t have asked for any more of the players to be honest. They’ve listened to everything I’ve tried to get them to do.
“They’ve bought into everything we’ve tried to do moving forward. It’s been busy as you could imagine. It came around quick and, all of a sudden, you’ve got to get prepared and your focus goes straight to the next game and what I can do to help the team and help the players.
“To be fair to the players, they’ve been absolutely brilliant. There’s a lot of young players in there who I’ve worked with previously, so that makes it easier, and then a real good group of senior lads who have tried to help and drive the standards themselves.
“It’s been a good week, but ultimately it all comes down to the game tomorrow, I know that.”
‘Taking ownership’
The former Wales midfielder has challenged the players to take ‘ownership’ of the responsibility of representing Leicester City and taking pride in wearing the badge.
He continued: “We’ve done a little bit of work with the lads this week: ‘Lads, it’s you who have to drive that’. That’s not us as the coaches or the Manager, whoever’s [been here] throughout that time, pushing it onto the players like ‘you deal with it’.
“But I think there has to be a certain pride among yourself that we’ve spoken about this week. ‘Listen lads, you are the team, you are the ones who are getting judged, you’re the ones who are in the Club, the ones who can make what we’re trying to give you work’.
“So we can all give a game plan and tactical information, but ultimately: ‘Lads, it’s down to you to make it work – and be proud of that, be proud of the team you want to be, be proud of being a player in this team and what it means to wear this shirt’.
“That has to come from the lads. We’ve spoken about it this week and maybe taking a little more ownership of that. It can’t always be driven by staff all the time, [so] can the lads really buy into that and drive that forward?”
‘Be ready to match them’
Looking back to our 1-0 win at The Valley back in late August, King knows it’ll be another tough test for City this weekend, despite Charlton being at the lower end of the table.
“It will be a tough game,” he added. “If we remember the away game, as smash and grab, 1-0 wins away from home go, it was probably one of those.
“They were really strong on that day and Abdul [Fatawu] got us out of jail a little bit. We know what sort of game to expect at the weekend. Nathan Jones, we know what sort of team we’re going to get from him. He’s passionate.
“His team will play with aggression, fight, a directness. I actually played for his assistant, Curtis Fleming, when he was down at Bristol City and I was there.
“They’re two really good, experienced coaches. They know what it is to be successful, obviously, with Nathan Jones at Luton and then getting Charlton back into the league as well. It will be a really tough game. [They are] physical, aggressive, [have] a clear game plan – so we’ve got to make sure we’re ready to match that.”
