On the back of overcoming Bristol City on Filbert Way on Tuesday, the Hoops are next up on home soil, the latest in a match-up which dates back to the late 1940s.
With the help of statistics and historical insights from Dave Smith, co-author of Of Fossils & Foxes, we take a look at some of the detail from those past clashes with the R’s...
Previous Encounters
Esteban Cambiasso bows out with a goal for the Foxes vs. QPR.
Esteban Cambiasso bows out with a goal for the Foxes vs. QPR.
This meeting will be the 64th clash between City and QPR in all competitions, the majority of which have taken place in the second tier of English football. We have enjoyed 25 victories to date, with draws a rare occurrence – you have to look back more than a decade since the last stalemate between the clubs in 2007.
Clashes between the two have also tended to reflect the fortunes of each club in the wider league pyramid. On three occasions, City and QPR have moved divisions together, having both been relegated from the top flight in 1969 before later achieving promotion in tandem in 1983 and again in 2014.
More recently, we were beaten 4-1 in the reverse league fixture at MATRADE Loftus Road in December, although we had won on our previous visit in October 2023. At King Power Stadium, Rangers claimed a 2-1 league victory in March 2024, while one of the most emphatic results in the modern era came on the final day of the 14/15 Premier League season when City triumphed 5-1 at home, in Esteban Cambiasso’s goalscoring final appearance for us.
Landmark Moments & Last Times
Joe Waters netted a brace on his LCFC debut against the Hoops.
Joe Waters netted a brace on his LCFC debut against the Hoops.
One of the most memorable cup meetings between the clubs came in the FA Cup Quarter-Final of 1974. That tie is best remembered for Joe Waters scoring twice on his debut for Leicester after replacing the injured Alan Birchenall, securing a famous victory for the Foxes.
The most recent cup meeting arrived in January 2025 when we produced an emphatic 6-2 victory in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round at King Power Stadium, with goals coming from James Justin (2), Stephy Mavididi, Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Vardy (pen) and Wout Faes.
Hat-tricks have been rare in the history of the fixture, with just one recorded for each club. Arthur Rowley struck three in December 1951, while Bert Addinall netted the only QPR hat-trick in the very first meeting between the sides in 1948. Penalty kicks have also played their part over the years, with 14 converted in post-war meetings, split evenly between the two clubs. The most recent Leicester penalty came from Jamie Vardy in the 2025 FA Cup tie, while Rangers’ last successful spot-kick in the fixture was scored by Marc Nygaard in 2007.
Played For Both & Top Scorers
Our top scorer against the R's is Gary Lineker.
Our top scorer against the R's is Gary Lineker.
A number of players have represented both clubs across the decades, including Lloyd Dyer, Paul Konchesky, Danny Simpson, Ben Hamer, DJ Campbell and Asmir Begovic. The last direct transfer between the sides saw Simpson arrive at Leicester in 2014 before lifting the Premier League title with us, as Konchesky moved to QPR the following year.
Despite the long list, no single player has managed to score for both clubs in this fixture. Our leading marksman in meetings with Rangers remains Gary Lineker, who scored six times against the Hoops, while Bert Addinall tops QPR’s list with nine goals scored in the early post-war encounters.
