Heartwize, who focus on CPR education and increasing access to defibrillators in the community, recently delivered vital life-saving training to members of our First Team squad and Academy players as part of their work alongside the VS Foundation.
Inspired by the training and the importance of swift intervention in cardiac emergencies, the players made a collective decision to fund new defibrillators to support the charity’s ongoing work in our region.
As a Club, we have recognised the importance of defibrillators for a long time, a commitment powerfully illustrated in 2017 when a device helped save the life of our legendary Club Ambassador, Alan Birchenall. Quick intervention remains crucial, and we ensure 32 defibrillators are available on-site for a Men’s First Team matchday, with 20 in place at King Power Stadium on non-matchdays.
Use of the devices, CPR training and response to scenarios that require it have become a core part of our staff training programme. This season alone, 350 stewards have been trained in their use, ensuring rapid, confident action whenever needed.
This highlights the need for both individuals and venues to be prepared, and the donation from the players, along with the work from Heartwize, will see the defibrillators located at various community settings across Leicestershire, to ensure more people have access to critical life-saving equipment.
Ricardo Pereira, our Men’s First Team ambassador for the Heartwize fixture, said: “As a squad we’ve been so impressed with what we’ve all learned from Heartwize this week, understanding the importance of CPR training and fast access to defibrillators. It can make all the difference in saving someone’s life.
“As footballers, we’re fortunate that help in an emergency – with medical staff and equipment – is often very close by, especially in stadiums or at the training ground.
“With more training and defibrillators across our communities, we can hopefully give more people a better chance of survival.”
Friday’s Premier League fixture at home to Brentford is the first of four dedicated matchdays in support of the Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation’s nominated charities for the 2024/25 campaign. The game against the Bees will honour Heartwize, with supporters given the opportunity to contribute to their incredible work through matchday donations, along with the chance of engaging directly with the charity and their beneficiaries. Prof. William Toff from Heartwize, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Leicester City’s players for this generous donation. Every second counts in a cardiac emergency, and these defibrillators will make a real impact in our mission to improve survival rates across Leicestershire.
“Their support will help us continue delivering CPR education and ensuring defibrillators are available where they’re needed most.”
Founded in 2014 by cardiologists Prof. William Toff and Dr. Doug Skehan, Heartwize is now an organisation run by over 80 volunteers. Their work has already reached over 60,000 people in Leicestershire, and they have provided defibrillators to dozens of schools to significantly improve survival rates.
On Friday, supporters will have the opportunity to donate, speak directly with Heartwize volunteers about the importance of CPR, and learn more about how this training can save lives.
Look out for special matchday activities around King Power Stadium, including bucket collections, demonstrations and more.
Every donation goes directly towards expanding Heartwize’s vital CPR and defibrillator training. Text CPR plus the amount you wish to donate to 70460 to support their work. For example, to donate £5 text CPR 5 To 70460.
