Reflecting on a tough result at Gateshead International Stadium, the defender understands the performance wasn’t good enough and work must be done to make sure we compete much better next time out against Sunderland.

“I don’t think it was good enough at all today,” Stapleton stated following full-time in Gateshead. “I think we were second best to every ball and we know we can’t play like that again next weekend.

“We’ve shown glimpses in the past few weeks that we are going in the right direction, and we need to get back to that point.

The defender urged her team-mates to learn from the Newcastle defeat.

“It’s been a tough week (with the three games), but I don’t think that can be an excuse. We weren’t good enough today, but we will be next week.”

Analysing what went wrong on Sunday afternoon, the Republic of Ireland defender is also keen to quickly make amends this weekend when we make another trip up to the North East.

“We need to find that fight and desire and bit of energy when things are getting tough,” she continued. “There’s always going to be goals in football, but you need to keep your head and keep going and not drop your head like we did today.

“We need them (the fans) to stick with us. You can see glimpses of what we’re trying to achieve and it’s going to be a long journey. We need everything, including the fans, to stick with us because we will be better.”
