A first half goal from Charlotte Wardlaw, followed by Martha Thomas' second-half brace and a late Aoife Mannion strike, was enough to defeat the Foxes in Gateshead.

Two changes were made from the City side that lost out to London City Lionesses in midweek, with Jess Ziu and Sarah Mayling coming in to replace Emilia Pelgander and Denny Draper, who dropped to the bench.

Newcastle take an early lead

The hosts had the lead at the break.

The Magpies headed into the home fixture on fine form, having won their opening three games of the WSL2 season, and unlike City, had an entire week's preparation, without the distraction of a midweek Subway Players Cup match.

The freshness and confidence were on show in the early stages, as the hosts took the lead after 12 minutes through Wardlaw, who sent a low effort off the post and into the net from close range.

Following this setback, Leicester looked comfortable in possession, but were unable to breach a way through the resilient Newcastle backline, and the Foxes went into the break a goal down.

Thomas gets a brace

Losing out in the North East.

From the restart, up until the hour mark, the Foxes looked positive in search of a way back into the game, coming closest when Araya Dennis drove forward and fed in Poppy Pritchard, who saw her effort saved by Anna Tamminen in the Magpies' goal.

The hosts then regained control, however, scoring two quick-fire goals in the 67th and 69th minutes, both from Thomas. The first a header directed into the far corner, out of reach of Katie Keane.

Two minutes later, the centre-forward was in again, and after making space for a shot, fired underneath the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, before a late fourth from Mannion saw out the scoreline in the North East.

A trip to Sunderland is next

The Foxes are back in the North East next weekend.

The result leaves us sixth in the standings after four games, and another long away day is up next in the calendar as we make the trip back up to the North East next Sunday, to face Sunderland.
