LCFC Women defeated Liverpool 1-0 to get our Barclays Women’s Super League season up and running
Emily van Egmond scored the only goal of the game at King Power Stadium on her home debut
The Foxes had to play 35 minutes with 10 players after Shannon O’Brien’s sending off early in the second half
Pride was the overriding emotion from Interim Manager Rick Passmoor, who spoke post-match
Despite playing the majority of the second half with 10 players, following Shannon O’Brien’s 55th-minute red card, City recorded a maiden win of the Barclays Women’s Super League season in our first home fixture of 25/26. It was Emily van Egmond, on her home debut, who found the breakthrough at King Power Stadium, looping a header over Faye Kirby from Janice Cayman’s cross, before a resolute defensive display earned a clean sheet against the Reds.
That came much to the delight of the Foxes faithful, who will have another chance to see Leicester in WSL action on home soil on Sunday 28 September, against Tottenham Hotspur (12pm kick-off). “I’m really proud because we were comfortable in the first half,” the Interim Manager reflected after full-time on Filbert Way. “Liverpool came here with a plan and played really well, but we stayed in the game.
“And then in the second half there was a little bit more momentum, a little bit more of a shift and that was created by the players themselves and the whole squad.
“It was just a little bit of a tactical tweak with how we go and engage and prevent them from playing or having the ball so much and so easily and putting them under a bit more stress and pressure. We could then get a foothold and push and press forward.
“I think we’ve also got to say here at King Power Stadium, what a great group of fans we’ve got who backed us all the way, so they made that extra push today to get us over the line.”
Post-match words from Passmoor.
The spirit within the group was evident throughout, according to Passmoor, who saw all the qualities and characteristics that he asked for, with major improvements from the opening day defeat to Manchester United. There’s plenty of encouragement, therefore, with a trip to defending WSL champions Chelsea up next this Sunday (12pm kick-off).
“When you look at our mentality, it was like a monster mentality,” he added. “They really kept in the game, they communicated, they worked really hard together and then tried to create opportunities, potentially on the break.
“With where we are at the moment, we’re seeing progress with the ball in possession. What we have is a real positive mentality as a group and that was evident today.
“We’re trying to change quite a bit of the philosophy and move forward and it’ll take time. I think today doesn’t define anything; we’re just working towards being better players this season.”
