Pre-season game four took the Foxes to the south of Spain, with the first of our two friendlies against Spanish opposition ending in another success for Martin’s men at Estadio Nuevo Mirador, courtesy of Kirsten Otchere’s third goal of the summer.

More minutes in the legs and an understanding of the strategies the Manager wants to deploy were the primary objectives of Wednesday evening’s fixture and Martin was pleased with what he saw across the 90 minutes, particularly after making some tactical changes at half-time.

The 40-year-old commented after the final whistle: “A good opposition, a different challenge tactically, so we had a few problems in the first half, which is really good for us at this stage. Also, we had a big day of work yesterday, two sessions in the heat, so there was a bit of that in the legs on a really soft pitch.

“There’s some brilliant learnings to come from that for sure. I really enjoyed the second half performance. Those guys had the benefit of a bit of time at half-time for us to show some clips from the first half and the problems we faced – a different kind of press, a different formation to what we’ve played so far, so it was really good for us.

“It’s brilliant to get minutes in the legs. We reassessed the minutes some of the lads were going to play. Some of the football the guys played tonight was outstanding. They got on with the job, did really well and we’ll be better tomorrow than we were today.”

A physically demanding fixture in the heat, there was no shortage of energy on display from the Foxes, boosted by the additions of Conor Chaplin and Alex McCarthy, who both started, as well as returning centre-back Harry Souttar after featuring at the FIFA World Cup.

“I’m really pleased with the win, to keep a clean sheet and debuts for Alex [McCarthy] and Conor [Chaplin] and Harry [Souttar] coming back,” Martin continued. “Those three will be better for it and I thought they did great. There’s lots to work on still but overall, pretty pleased.

“Our guys are ready to run, ready to fight and willing to run and fight for each other, which is fantastic. There will be so many behaviours which we celebrate tonight in terms of the work rate and the running and the intensity they showed. We have to live there all the time and keep that up.

“After the drinks break in the first half, we dropped off a little bit of intensity and tempo. In the second half, we had to pick it back up again and the guys were relentless with the running, so we have to be there all the time. We have a lot of young guys, a lot of new guys learning, so I really enjoyed the mentality of the group.”

A host of Academy products continue to impress under Martin, who reserved praise for the application they’ve shown so far this pre-season.

“We have some who will be huge players for us and then there will be some who will benefit massively from this pre-season,” the Manager added. “I think they are going to impact us and the team with the competitions we’re in.

“One of the most exciting parts of this job is the number of young players I get to work with and talent that we get entrusted to develop and help in their career and pathway. They are here because they are good and they can help us.

“How much they can help us will depend on how much they keep growing and keep wanting to be coached and learn. First and foremost, they are brilliant young men, really top people who are desperate to play for this Football Club, which is what we need.

“It’s an exciting time for them.”
