Manager Russell Martin reacted to victory on Filbert Way

Our first Sky Bet League One win of the season was secured at King Power Stadium on Tuesday night courtesy of quick-fire goals from Will Alves and Harry Howell at the end of the first half, both scoring their first senior goals for the Club.

Speaking after full-time, Martin referenced the injury to Jakub Stolarczyk as a de-stabilising factor in the opening minutes, but one the young team regrouped from to see out victory and back-to-back clean sheets, with substitute ‘keeper Alex McCarthy pulling off some sensational late stops.

“I’m very happy for everyone – for the players, the staff, the fans,” the 40-year-old stated. “We played some brilliant stuff and should have scored a couple more goals after a bit of a shaky start with what happened to Jak early on.

“It looks really serious, unfortunately. I’m absolutely gutted for Jakub. Let’s hope for good news. It wobbled the team a little bit and having a goalkeeper come on at that point is really difficult.

“Al (Alex) grew into the game and at the end everyone was singing his name. He made three amazing saves and shows us why we were desperate to bring him here. In big moments, he produced. He has to make too many saves late on in the game, but he shouldn’t have to.

“We should be 3-0 up at that point. We should have scored an amazing goal if Bobby [De Cordova-Reid] put that chance in, which is really unfortunate because he was really good tonight. We had some big performances and then we got really tired and didn’t manage the game well enough in the end.

“But when you look at who we had out on the pitch and the guys playing, Louis Page has played three 90 minutes in a week for the first time in his career, Christian [McFarlane] the same. JJ (Jayden Joseph) had to come off because he was really fatigued. Luke [Thomas] and Soutts (Harry Souttar) going again.

“Will Alves was really top. He’s an amazing young man. He works so hard and is really resilient with what he’s been through already early on in his career. He was superb tonight. He deserved the goal. He put in an outstanding performance. He’s been brilliant from day one.

“With such a young team, we have to be patient and give them time to grow and we have to aim for consistency with them because sometimes it can a little bit up and down.

“I’m really proud of them and so pleased. The team is growing all the time and they will get better for tonight, but my job is to demand more from them and let them grow.

“We keep two clean sheets in a row, but the last half an hour was a bit too open. It’s purely down to fatigue and we missed a couple of easy passes and then it gets a bit sloppy. We have to work on improving that and the young guys will.”

Two goals just before the break made the difference, which calmed any nerves around the stadium after the disappointment of not being able to make the breakthrough at MK Dons at the weekend, though Martin still expects a greater level of control in games.

“We spoke about it before the game,” our Manager revealed. “If we score, we have to have the mentality of trying to get the next goal. Because we played such good football in the middle of the pitch and got through and broke their lines, then we were in a rush to score and that final pass wasn’t there.

“That final action needs to be better. If we’re not, we need to spend longer in their half and make them run. The ball kept coming back too quickly. I’m being really demanding of them. I’m delighted with the result.

“The performances have been building. It’s been coming and we should have won Saturday, but tonight we do and now we have to go again on Saturday.”
