A 6-1 victory over Fulham Under-21s saw us begin the competition with a comprehensive win, moving to the top of Southern Group B at the end of matchday one.

Watson grabbed a brace in the first half at King Power Stadium, with his maiden goal in Leicester colours a particularly impressive strike.

Keen to kick on after joining on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, the winger is determined to show more of the same when our league campaign resumes following the international break.

“It’s a bit of relief,” the youngster admitted, speaking post-match on Filbert Way. “I’ve had so many opportunities so far, but it’s a pleasure to play in this team as a forward player. You get so many chances and so many actions in the final third.

“I’m happy tonight as two went in, but I’m hungry for more. Last season was very stop-start [for me], so I still feel like I’m finding my sharpness and my ruthlessness in the final third, but it’s a big part of my game that I need to add to at this level.

“I think in this team me and all the other forwards can get so many numbers, goals and assists.”

Putting to bed the frustrations from last weekend, when the Foxes drew 1-1 with 10-man Barnsley at Oakwell, it was clear that City were in no mood to take their foot off the gas against a youthful Fulham side.

“There was disappointment at the weekend with the draw, which felt like a loss to be honest,” the 20-year-old reflected. “There was a bit of a burning desire coming into this one that we needed to be ruthless.

“I think we had 35 shots the gaffer was saying, so there’s still more to come but I’m sure we’re going to get there. We need to put teams to the sword and when we get goals we can’t come off them, so it’s nice.”
