Leicester City are facing Notts County on the opening weekend of the Sky Bet League One season

The first challenge of 26/27 sees us make the short journey to Nottingham for a meeting with the Magpies at Meadow Lane – a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday afternoon, which will be in front of 2,124 members of the travelling Blue Army.

Ahead of what could be his full Foxes debut, having made his bow as a substitute against Northampton Town last week, Watson shared thoughts on what he believes the season as a whole can bring and why this opening game is such a significant one.

“It’s massive that we get off to a good start,” he commented, speaking from LCFC Training Ground this week. “It’s not going to be an easy game. I don’t think any game this year is going to be easy.

“We’ve got to go and attack it with the principles that the gaffer has set and take the positives and also the learnings we got from the first game and hopefully it’ll be a good performance and result.

“A lot of it has been on us. We’ve worked on the systems we think we’re going to play against, but I think we’ve got enough to hurt them. First and foremost, the basics need to be on point, which I think they were in the last game – running, pressing, if we lose the ball, we run across the pitch to get it back.

“I think we’ve been set up perfectly. Everything is so clear from the group of staff and the Manager in possession. We’ve got the quality and set up to hopefully go and put on a good display.”

With different styles among the current wingers in the squad, which now includes another Brighton & Hove Albion loanee in Harry Howell, Watson believes using the high competition for places to our advantage can lead to more positive outcomes, as demonstrated in our recent 1-0 Carabao Cup success, when the 20-year-old replaced Stephy Mavididi during the second half.

“I loved it,” the on-loan youngster began, when asked about how he’s been settling into life at Leicester. “I’ve really enjoyed the first couple of weeks. Training has been really intense, with good quality and we got a nice win against Northampton to start the season off.

“That’s what any good team needs, a little bit of difference. In the game against Northampton, Stephy tired out the full-back and then I came on and the game opened up. I think that’s going to be massive for us this season. I’m going to have to come off the bench or start a game and Stephy will come on.

“In the final third I like to mix it up. It’s massive that when I get the ball, I need to be positive and make things happen. It’s on me to provide and score. The backline do a massive part.

“When you watch us play, I think the two phases are massive for us – the middle and back. We build up really well, are solid out of possession and then it’s on us forwards to create the magic and win us games.”

Not getting ahead of himself, the former Sunderland wide man says the squad are ready to deal with the pressure of being a team to beat in this division, wanting to take the game to the opposition by being exciting in the final third of the pitch and making things happen.

“I’m ready to kick on and create something this year with Leicester,” a determined Watson added. “The main one is promotion, the target of the team. I think it’s got to be in the back of your mind, we know where we want to get to, we’ve just got to focus on game by game, week by week, with different opposition.

“Mainly it’s focusing on ourselves. If we do everything right, we’ll get the wins and the performances we need. It’s a tough league, as is the Championship, and I’m expecting League One to be the same with the three-game weeks in the winter period.

“We want to dominate games and win as many games as we can and then individually, I’ve set my targets goals and assists wise, and the big one is getting as many games and starts in to go and give myself the platform to get those goals and assists.

“It’s exciting, it’s different dynamic for me. It’s the first time I’ve been in this situation, but as a forward, it’s a dream. The full team want the ball as much as possible.”
