Leicester City were beaten 2-0 by West Ham United on Thursday evening
Tomáš Souček opened the scoring prior to a Jannik Vestergaard own goal
Wout Faes assessed a ‘tough evening’ for the Foxes in east London
He believes the group carry the determination required to turn things around
Both Hammers goals came during the first half at London Stadium, with Tomáš Souček’s 21st-minute opener added to when Jarrod Bowen’s shot deflected in off Jannik Vestergaard shortly before the break.
Unable to find a route back into the contest in the second period, it proved to be a fourth consecutive defeat for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, leaving us 19th in the Premier League table. Remaining five points adrift of safety after Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers also both lost in midweek, there is still plenty to play for as we head towards the final three months of the campaign.
“It was a tough evening,” the Belgium international reflected. “We’re very disappointed because we started the game quite well, similar to Brentford. And then there’s two cheap goals that we concede and we’re not capable of scoring ourselves. “Even though in the second half we got out with a little bit more intensity and a little bit more pressure forward, but still then we didn’t score the goals so that is not enough. That’s the thing.
“If you concede the goals and aren’t able to convert yourself, then that’s maybe a mental thing at the moment that is costing us as well. We just have to keep going.”
The fact that the home side didn’t cause too many problems other than the two goals only added to the frustration for the centre-back, who referenced the need to be on it from the first whistle to the last in order to start picking up points.
With a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea coming up next Sunday afternoon (2pm GMT kick-off), there is time to reassess for the final push, with over a week to prepare in Seagrave before heading back to the capital.
“That’s the league that we’re in,” the defender admitted. “Every small mistake is being punished straight away and we just have to erase them because the games are coming down and we have to start winning as soon as possible.
“It’s another blow we have to take but you have to be able to bounce back and maybe a small thing can change it - a small action or a good shot on goal. And at the moment, it’s not the case so we have to stick together and keep working hard. Hopefully next week we can get the result.
“We need to keep believing that we’re capable and keep trusting our qualities and keep sticking together and fight together because it’s the only way that we are going to be able to get some points.
“It’s the last stride. The games are counting down so we can’t look too far ahead, we just have to look weekend by weekend, game by game, to see if we can get results and climb the table.”
