Young attacker Will Alves speaks on the rigours of pre-season
He played 45 minutes of our 3-1 win over Peterborough United
City are now into week two of the summer schedule
The attacker also provided insight into his loan spell at Cardiff City last term
Carrying excitement from beginning our pre-season friendly schedule with a 3-1 success over Peterborough United at LCFC Training Ground on Saturday, in which Alves played 45 minutes, the Academy graduate revealed how things are shaping up within the squad fitness-wise and the good vibes in camp. “It was great to be back and everyone playing minutes and getting through the game,” the attacker said following the weekend’s victory. “Obviously winning as well was a bonus.
“It’s been a really positive week and to get a result and everyone play well, it’s a great start. There’s a great togetherness and obviously the training has been really intense. We’ve had a lot of double sessions.
“It’s been an enjoyable week. Everyone has enjoyed coming in every day and playing football and I think that’s the main thing. Coming into the game, we might still have tired legs, but everyone has got through it well.”
There was a blend of youth and experience in the two line-ups that faced the Posh and Alves felt the Academy players benefitted from being alongside several experienced heads, not just during the 90 minutes but across the training week.
Playing the second half in Seagrave.
The 20-year-old explained: “I remember when I was first coming up, I felt a bit nervous to be around such experienced professional footballers and really just taking all the information that I could from them and trying to evolve my game and improve myself.
“Having a lot of leaders in the team is really helpful for us young players. They give us good advice and also tell us when we’re not doing something right. We have a great group here.”
Returning from his loan spell at Cardiff City during the second half of last season, where he featured 15 times, providing four goal contributions, Alves believes he has come back a better player, more equipped to deal with the rigours of the Championship once again this term.
“It was great, I really enjoyed it,” the youngster added. “It was a shame the team ended up going down but for myself to be getting my real first minutes of professional football in the Championship as well, it was great for me.
“Hopefully I can get many more minutes this season in the Championship too. I feel like playing under the pressure of being in a battle at the bottom of the Championship, it was just dealing with the pressure but also maturing while I was out there.”
