The central defender, who joined the Club this summer, has settled in quickly with Steve Beaglehole’s Under-23s, and he was a key figure in Wednesday’s Premier League International Cup opener.

The Foxes got off to a winning start in Group B courtesy of efforts from Darnell Johnson and Admiral Muskwe, following Hughes’ early opener at King Power Stadium.

“It was very competitive,” he told LCFC TV at full-time on Filbert Way. “I think they’ve been told to try and roughen us up a little bit. We’re a very physical side so it was a good game for the spectators.

I’m loving it here, I’m fortunate that I’m playing. I’ll just keep putting in good performances and try to keep my place in the team.

“I thought we overcame that and won our battles. It proved enough for us to get the 3-0 win.”

George Thomas was again impressive for the Foxes, and it was his delivery which landed to Hughes for City’s first of three goals.

“It was a great ball from him, it’s easy for us to get on the end of things when he puts in crosses,” Hughes added.

“With them doing zonal marking, when you attack the ball, it makes it a little bit easier.

The former Chester defender celebrates with his Under-23s team-mates.

“We’re massive on set-plays, we work on them before the games so it’s pleasing to score from two tonight.”

On his start to life at King Power Stadium, he continued: “It was always going to be different for me, coming from Chester. I’ve been adapting to the tactical side of it.

“I’m loving it here, I’m fortunate that I’m playing. I’ll just keep putting in good performances and try to keep my place in the team.”
