Emile Smith Rowe and Adama goals did the damage on a deeply frustrating afternoon for Ruud van Nistelrooy's side. For the second time this week, the Foxes’ performance had encouraging moments before the break, but the game got away from us in the second half, as the visitors took control. This result leaves us 19th in the Premier League, just two points adrift of safety, albeit having played one game more than those immediately above.
Before kick-off, Jordan Ayew came back into the XI, taking the place of Facundo Buonanotte, at the end of a three-game run of home games in LE2. The Ghanian was in the thick of things from the off. Inside two minutes, Wout Faes diverted a high ball his way in the box. After wresting the ball away from Raúl Jiménez, Ayew also had ex-City Academy graduate Calvin Bassey for company, but was able to get a shot away – powered into Bernd Leno’s chest from point-blank range. Timothy Castagne, another former Fox in Marco Silva’s XI, scored five goals over three years for City. And he soon nearly registered another Leicester strike in the form of an own goal. Ayew’s work down the right flank gave him the room to slip Jamie Vardy in behind Joachim Andersen. The 38-year-old knew the angle was too tight to shoot himself, but he spotted Stephy Mavididi bursting through the middle. By the time the cross arrived in the box, Castagne had won the race to it, but his touch was goal-bound – and needed Leno to parry it around the base of his near post to avoid a comedy of errors giving us the lead.

Fulham, though, are a consolidated Premier League outfit with attacking threats aplenty. A one-two between the pairing of Harry Wilson and Smith Rowe gave the latter a sighter, flashing wide from 18 yards out. Just before the half-hour, a dart forwards from left-back Victor Kristiansen saw the Denmark international fire one wide himself as well. Although Alex Iwobi’s mis-hit cross grazed Jakub Stolarcyzk’s crossbar, Bassey’s bolt across the box – narrowly skidding past the far post – felt the greater opportunity for Fulham later on. Antonee Robinson also thrashed a low drive wide of the other post in front of the Spion Kop before half-time. For the second time in four days on Filbert Way, it was goalless at the break, and equally like that Crystal Palace clash on Wednesday, the visitors led early in the second half. Jiménez’s wide delivery looked too deep for Wilson, but the Welshman was able to drag it back into a viable position. Crossing originally for Sasa Lukic, his deft touch ultimately teed up Smith Rowe to nod into the net with Stolarczyk displaced on his line.
Jordan Ayew
Jiménez’s free header, from Wilson’s corner, nearly gave the visitors a quick-fire second as well. City needed a route back and one avenue came when Bilal El Khannouss drove forwards and slid it across to Mavididi. The former Arsenal youth winger forced a strong stop from Leno, who before long was getting down well to also thwart Harry Winks’ hit from range. Ayew then couldn’t keep his hit down after Vardy bravely put his body on the line to beat Bassey and make the pass. It had been a positive spell, but the momentum was lost with a little over 20 minutes remaining. Just like that, Wilson’s cross was nicely side-footed home by substitute Adama – and it was 2-0 to Fulham. Robinson missed a sitter with three minutes to go, but two was as many as Fulham could muster. These are unquestionably tough times for City, who must find a way to win over the coming weeks if they are to climb away from danger and retain our Premier League status.
