The Barclays FA Women’s Super League was in sight for the Foxes when London City Lionesses arrived in Quorn on Sunday 4 April, 2021. Five points clear with just three games to play, one victory would be enough for a historic promotion.
There were bound to be some nerves as the players prepared for a potentially momentous occasion at Farley Way Stadium and their opponents would enter the fixture with confidence, as the only team to defeat Leicester in the league to date.
A tense first half saw the teams go into the break level. But when Lachante Paul’s skill and persistence won a free-kick with just over 20 minutes to play, Leicester sensed an opportunity to put a set-piece routine into practice.
Charlie Devlin fired across a low ball to Remi Allen, whose clever flick set up Sam Tierney to shoot towards goal. Her first effort may have been blocked on the line, but there was no stopping her second, as she swept the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations on the pitch and on the touchline.
Tierney, once again demonstrating she was a player to step up to the big occasion, had scored her third goal in as many games. Another would make things more comfortable for the hosts and it duly arrived six minutes later.
Devlin was once again the architect, picking up possession in a deep position and spraying a sumptuous left-footed pass out to Esmee De Graaf on the wing.
A sharp first touch from the Netherlands international brought the ball inside and she then fed Natasha Flint in the middle. The forward’s 16th strike of the season followed as she controlled superbly and clinically fired past Shae Yanez in the Lionesses net.
Leicester now knew the title was theirs. A 12th consecutive victory – extending a new Championship record - ensured top-flight football would be heading to Leicester in 2021/22. And the full-time whistle sparked celebrations befitting the achievement.
Following the euphoria of that day, the Foxes were back in Quorn two weeks later for a Vitality Women’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Liverpool. And little extra motivation was required to get pumped up for the clash with the Reds, who they had beaten twice in the league already.
It was another tight encounter and just one goal settled it. Pressure on the visitors’ midfield forced them backwards and when Rachael Laws took too much time trying to get the ball from under her feet, Flint nipped in to grab possession in a danger position.
It fell kindly for Hannah Cain, who took one look up and placed the ball into the empty net to hand City a place in the fifth round of the competition, where they would face a top-flight outfit at Manchester United.
The impressive winning league run came to an end before the end of the month as Lewes defeated the champions 1-0 at The Dripping Pan. After a warm gesture from the hosts, who gave Leicester a guard of honour ahead of kick-off, it was an uncharacteristic performance from the Foxes.
And they had ‘keeper Kirstie Levell to thank for keeping the score at 0-0 earlier on, making a Save of the Season contending stop to thwart Lucy Ashworth-Clifford. The Lewes midfielder would also be involved in the game’s key moment as she was felled to win a penalty on 20 minutes.
Nigerian forward Ini Umotong took it, dispatching the spot-kick to hand the fifth-place side a home win, and inflicting just a second league loss of the season on Leicester. Nevertheless, it had been a historic month for LCFC Women.
