There was plenty of love for Spanish midfielder Vicente Iborra, who put in another sterling performance for the Foxes after netting his first goal for the Club.
Also on the agenda was how Claude Puel has handled himself during a ‘whirlwind’ couple of weeks as City boss, while Taggart and Tanner discuss why attacking full backs may become the norm at Leicester City.
City’s draw with Stoke
GT: “It was a fantastic game of football and I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t quite the result that we probably deserved given the chances we created, but you have to give Stoke credit the way they approached the game. They created a fair few chances themselves, so when you analyse the game as a whole, you’d say that a draw was a fair result.”
RT: “I think on chances, City shaded it and certainly they did so on possession the way Stoke lined up and sat so deep. They tried to stifle City’s desire to get in behind them and that made it difficult. It was encouraging in many respects from City’s point of view.”
Value in Vicente Iborra
RT: “If you look at the market value and what clubs are paying for certain players, he’s going to turn out to be an absolute bargain. He’s already become a bit of cult hero with the fans – they sing about him living on Saffron Lane. He keeps the ball well and he’s great to watch.”
GT: “Defensively, you don’t see the work he does as well. He fills in for people and does work that other players wouldn’t even dream of doing. His work rate and willingness to do the grubby jobs for the team is phenomenal. I absolutely love this guy to bits. Not only is he a proper footballer, he dictates the tempo of the game as we saw away at Swansea. He’s got every chance of becoming an absolute legend at Leicester.”
Changing the Foxes’ identity
RT: “City won the title on the counter attack and because of that, sides are prepared. This is what Claude Puel is talking about when he says about changing the identity of City a little bit. He wants his side to seize the initiative and control games a little bit more. We’ve seen the changes already with the wing backs bombing on – Danny Simpson was playing like a wing back at times. Inevitably, if you play like that there will always be space for the opposition to exploit, so it’s all a bit of a learning curve for them at the moment.”
Positive play under Claude Puel
RT: “I think it’s been very positive and the football has been very entertaining. You’ve seen the first half against Everton and the last hour or so against Stoke was very entertaining to watch. We were expecting a different type of approach from Puel, so it’s been refreshing to hear him talk about his philosophy and about getting the ball forward.”
GT: “When you play against teams like Stoke, you have to move the ball quickly and we saw that. Jamie Vardy was getting in for fun in the first half down the sides. We weren’t moving it quick enough in the first half, but in the second half we started doing what you call ‘lending’ the ball. The defenders lend the ball to the midfield and get it back and that allows people to move about the pitch.”
Realising City’s strengths
GT: “I think he’s realised what he has in his squad. He’s got pace and he’s got positivity, especially in the forward lines. Jamie Vardy is at his best when he’s running one-on-one and he’s in behind. It’s the same with Demarai Gray – give him the ball and he’ll run at defenders. We all know what Riyad Mahrez can do too.”
RT: “He was asked early on at the press conference about the reputation he had at Southampton. He said it was unfair to call it boring. He didn’t have the players that have that attacking flair and clinical edge to call upon and he has that at Leicester. You even look at the players on the bench with Islam Slimani and Shinji Okazaki. He’s got a plethora of talent and options.”
A two-week break
GT: “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind for him since he’s come in. He’ll be reasonably happy and for sure he’ll be analysing the game against Stoke. It’s early days and he’s done a good job because he’s quietened a lot of those critics down. He’s got to be given credit purely by the way he’s handled himself as well.”
