The Leicester City Under-18s were beaten 3-2 by Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup on Friday evening
City took a two goal lead but conceded twice late on at LCFC Training Ground
Coach Adam Barradell hopes the team will learn a lot from such a pressurised environment
It was a tough way to end the year for the young Foxes, who were eliminated from the FA Youth Cup after a late comeback from the London outfit in the East Midlands. Frustrated for the team and coaching staff alike, Barradell admits the foremost feeling right now is disappointment, but hopes a tough night at Seagrave will stand the young players in good stead for the months to come.
"The overall feeling from the night is disappointment in terms of the result and not managing to get through to the next round," the coach admitted. "A few days have past to allow us to reflect on the event.
"It was a real positive first half and I thought the way the boys executed the game plan was really positive and getting a couple of goals up against a strong team was really positive.
Ready for an FA Youth Cup challenge in Seagrave.
"To go in at half-time 2-0 up would have been great, so to concede that goal before just before changes your team talk, changes the feeling of the group but also gives Chelsea a bit of momentum which they didn't look like they had.
"They came out in the second half and that changed a little bit, so it's disappointing to concede through errors which we need to work better on to make sure they don't happen."
Failing to reach the next round of the competition is a hard pill to take for a side that performed so well in the first half, being denied a third goal after an opening double from Jake Evans.
But the coach went on to talk about how important these games are for the under-18s, in both victory and defeat: "The FA Youth Cup is a pressurised environment where boys have to control their emotions and that's why it's so good because at an Under-18s level, it's the closest we get to men's football.
"It's a big event and probably the biggest crowd we'll get this season, and the first time we've had the whole group together. We had a good week's preparation and it's probably the last time everyone will be together as players will move back into the Under-21s squad.
Jake Evans scored twice against the Blues.
"In those high-pressure games, it's those little moments that either go for you or against you, and sadly they went against us either through mistakes or not managing emotion, but they're moments that will stick with lads for a long time and as long as they learn from them, it will be beneficial."
City's youngsters now head into a winter break and have the chance to reflect on the game and prepare for their return, when they face Norwich City on Saturday 11 January (11am GMT kick-off) at Avant Training Centre.
With a three week spell away from the pitch, Barradell outlined the key targets he wants the lads to achieve in the New Year, as the Academy pathway looks to promote individuals up to the Development Squad, while preparing for the next batch of Under-16s that are ready for the jump.
"When you come back off a defeat like that, it's about what you learn from them," the coach continued. "We've got to manage possession better, and have it for longer spells against top opposition. But it's not just technical, it's the tactical side as well.
City's Under-18s return to action in the new year.
"At times, the boys performed the game plan well but when they changed shape, we tried to tweak it and that went well, but more so, I'd say it's the psychological part and about managing the big moments better and working as a group to rectify that.
"I said to the group after that they need to have individual goals. Which players are looking to get into the Under-21s and if you're in that group, what are you doing to push to the next level?
"We've got a lot of games after Christmas and there's a lot of individual objectives that the boys need to hit in order to push on and develop. Sometimes results are not going the way we want them to go but ultimately, if the boys are pushing on like we want them too, then we're doing the right job.
"As a group, we'll be looking to push on and lift ourselves up in the league. But it's our job to also look at the Under-16s and give them the opportunity to showcase their talent with us."
