Late Heartbreak For City's Women At Leaders Spurs

A 96th-minute winner from Tottenham Hotspur subjected Leicester City to a 1-0 defeat at Theobalds Lane in the FA Women's Championship on Wednesday evening.

City were defensively excellent throughout against the league leaders, with goalkeeper Demi Lambourne in fine form, but second half substitute Angela Addison finally broke the deadlock to seal all three points.

While the hosts were on top, Leicester arguably carved out the best chance of the first half when Melissa Johnson was played one-on-one with Tottenham ‘keeper Chloe Morgan, only to fire straight at the Spurs shot-stopper.

Tottenham striker Sarah Wiltshire was a constant thorn in City's side, though, and twice forced Lambourne in stunning stops, with here first tipping an effort wide before a diving fingertip save to deny the forward once again.

The home side continued to dominate possession, as Leicester were limited to counter attacks, and it almost reaped rewards as Rosie Axten was played through on goal inside the final five minutes, but her effort was tipped wide by Chloe Morgan.

Ultimately the clash ended in heartbreak for the visitors, however, as Addison fired low past a stoic Lambourne after a mazy run, breaking the hearts of Jonathan Morgan’s team and the travelling fans in Hertfordshire.

City's Women now have a weekend off before heading to Leigh Sports Village to take on Manchester United on Sunday 10 March (12pm GMT kick-off). They are currently sixth in the league with 20 points from 16 matches so far.
