This weekend, football clubs across the country will recognise and celebrate the contribution refugees and asylum seekers have made to the beautiful game.

Players such as Granit Xhaka and Nadia Nadim came from a refugee/asylum seeker background.

LCFC Community Trust work with refugee and asylum seeker-focused organisations such as After18, Amnesty International UK, De Montfort University and Leicester City of Sanctuary to provide opportunities, care and education for new arrivals into the city.

The Football Welcomes tournament is the showcase event, to highlight the efforts we make to support those who have fled their countries for a better life.

We’re really pleased to have been able to run the event in partnership with DMU in support of Amnesty’s Football Welcomes campaign.

Teams from Middlesbrough and Chelsea foundations made the journey to Leicester in a tournament that included girls as well as boys teams.

LCFC Community Trust Inclusion Manager, Marie Widerman, highlighted the occasion and said: “We’re really pleased to have been able to run the event in partnership with DMU in support of Amnesty’s Football Welcomes campaign.

“Around 120 players participated, 40 of which were female which is great. We also had families from Leicester City of Sanctuary join us too, which took the overall total to over 150 people on the day.”
