Aspects To Work On, Says Rodgers

As Leicester City switch their focus to visiting Chelsea on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers says work has begun on improving certain tactical aspects.
More on this story...

- Work has begun in preparation for Leicester City's visit to Chelsea on Sunday (4:30pm BST kick-off)
- Brendan Rodgers saw plenty of positives during City's 0-0 draw with Wolves last weekend
- The Foxes manager nonetheless has isolated several aspects which will be worked on this week
- Rodgers was also delighted with the performance of Çağlar Söyüncü in central defence

The Northern Irishman was pleased with many aspects of last Sunday's 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, but says there are some aspects which require improvement.

Against a side who had already played three competitive fixtures this summer, the Foxes fought valiantly at King Power Stadium and were unfortunate not to seal a maiden 2019/20 victory.

Previewing the clash with Frank Lampard's Blues at Stamford Bridge this weekend, Rodgers told the national media: "It’s a really good game and we look forward to that.

"What’s most important for us is we got the point on the board [vs. Wolves] and we take that. It’s a clean sheet for us, so defensively that was good.

Rodgers: The Players Gave Everything

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers speaks to LCFC TV after his sides opening day 0-0 draw with Wolves on Sunday...

"We just need to improve with the ball and take more care with our passing. That then allows us to affect the final third that bit more. Overall, I was pleased.

"If you look at Wolves’ record last year in the Premier League, it was one of the best, so that tells you that they don’t concede too many goals and they defend really deep.

"So you’re having to find ways to try and break through that. At this stage of the season, that can be a little difficult when you’re not at full fitness, but it’s definitely an element for us to improve.

"As the game wore on and Harvey [Barnes] came into it, we started to be threatening in behind that bit more and it just comes with more work, more time."

Çağlar was very good. He’s a good defender, he’s aggressive, he’s filling big shoes, but we always felt we would give him an opportunity.

Rodgers also took advantage of the opportunity to praise the performance of Çağlar Söyüncü, the Turkey international defender who impressed many on Filbert Way on Sunday.

"The supporters will have been here before over these last 12 months or so, where you could have lost that game 1-0, and we didn’t do that," he added.

"Çağlar was very good. He’s a good defender, he’s aggressive, he’s filling big shoes, but we always felt we would give him an opportunity.

"He’s a young player and he’s playing alongside a top-class centre-half in Jonny [Evans] and Jonny will help him in his positioning in the game.

Watch the best of the action from the Foxes' season opener against Wolves at King Power Stadium...

"I thought he was excellent, really aggressive, he won his headers, defended forward, and he’s good on the ball. He’s got a good turn of speed and I thought he did really well.

"He got a round of applause from the players in there afterwards, so he certainly impressed them and I was delighted for him.

"We kept fighting, we kept working, and we didn’t get the three points, but we’ll take on, and that gives us something to build on."
