Fan's View: A Night To Remember In Luton

In September's Fan's View column, Leicester City supporter Thomas Smith explains why the Club's Carabao Cup journey has already been an enjoyable one for the Foxes faithful...
More on this story...

When you follow the Foxes from outside of an LE postcode, the Carabao Cup provides an opportunity for away matches to feel like home ties.

On Tuesday 24 October, as we make our way to Kenilworth Road, thoughts were well away from the following night’s fourth round draw.

A tricky test lies in wait before we can do so, a clash with newly-promoted Luton Town, and there was heavy drizzle and the smell of a cup upset in the air.

But fortunately, only the drizzle stuck around for the 90 minutes, as Leicester produced a memorable performance in front of a vocal 1,500-strong travelling Blue Army.

The evening was a throwback to yesteryear with supporters housed behind the goal, craning their necks in unison to see every bit of the action around the structural bars propping up the roof.

Goals: Luton Town 0 Leicester City 4

Watch the goals from Kenilworth Road where the Foxes beat the Hatters 4-0 in the Carabao Cup...

Supporters who entered through turnstiles stitched within the tapestry of terraced housing, akin to some of those at Filbert Street, whose existence can still be spotted by the eagle eyed on Burnmoor Street.

But the night was as much a sign of the future, with City confidently dispatching their Sky Bet Championship opponents with two goals either side of the interval.

If Youri Tielemans’ performance was a timely reminder of the Belgium international’s pedigree, then James Justin’s accomplished goalscoring debut was a telling indication of the Foxes' strength in depth.

On an emotional return to his former club, Justin played with a confidence and authority, which did not indicate this was his first competitive outing since his summer arrival from the Hatters.

Now we can talk about the draw. ‘Who next?’ ‘When is the draw?’ ‘Is it tomorrow?’ ‘Yes!’ And we wait.

On Wednesday 25 October, unbeknown to me, I watched our next League Cup opponents.

If Youri Tielemans’ performance was a timely reminder of the Belgium international’s pedigree, then James Justin’s accomplished goal-scoring debut was a telling indication of the Foxes' strength in depth.

Huddled on one of the Pirelli Stadium’s three terraces with my University of Derby flatmates, we watched the Brewers defeat AFC Bournemouth. Well, we watched most of it.

When the match was interrupted for a third and final time by floodlight failure, the referee blew for full-time and the players applauded the fans.

Only when we had left the stadium, were we informed that the game had in fact not been abandoned and that it was set to continue.

By the time 28 minutes of added time had been signalled by the fourth official and Lloyd Dyer had entered the fray for the hosts, we were on the A38 back to Derby and attention had firmly turned to the draw.

Huddled round a laptop in your typically stuffy student kitchen, the big names came and went, City avoiding any of their Premier League counterparts.

“No. 8 Burton Albion, will face… no. 12, Leicester City.”

Cue raucous cheers, another away tie, close to home! With the table becoming an impromptu drum to aid the celebrations, I am astonished we did not get a noise complaint!

Burton will undoubtedly be a test for the Foxes, but with the way we're playing, there's no reason we can't continue our Carabao Cup journey.
