City Beaten In Injury Time By Liverpool

Leicester City suffered heartbreak at Anfield after a late penalty saw them suffer a 2-1 loss to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

A lively opening period on Merseyside saw midfielder James Milner shoot off target at the back post on 13 minutes, before Sadio Mané fired straight at Kasper Schmeichel on the half-hour mark.

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino, latching onto Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross, then lifted an effort over, while Çağlar Söyüncü forced shot-stopper Adrian into a fine save, but the Turkey international was eventually flagged offside.

Despite going toe-to-toe with the European champions for long periods of the first half, Liverpool took the lead five minutes before the interval, as Mané latched onto Milner’s fine pass before slotting past Schmeichel.

The Denmark international then did well to prevent Mané from scoring his and Liverpool’s second goal of the game, denying the Senegal international from inside the box with a minute of the first period to play.

After the break, Liverpool picked up where they left off as Salah hit the City wall with a free-kick before Mané was dispossessed by Jonny Evans before he could get his shot away.

At the other end, Jamie Vardy found himself in a one-on-one situation with Adrián with 66 minutes gone, but he couldn’t round the Spaniard, who rushed off his line to deny the striker.

With around 20 minutes to play, City gained a foothold in the game and set about stamping their authority on the fixture.

Midfielder Dennis Praet first went close with a long-range drive that flew just inches wide of the Liverpool upright, before the Foxes produced a fine move that ultimately levelled matters.

On as a second-half substitute, Ayoze Pérez turned on the edge of the box and slipped in James Maddison, whose shot was powerful enough to beat Adrián with 10 minutes of normal time to play.

However, it was in injury time that the game was settled, as substitute Marc Albrighton was deemed to have fouled Mané in the box before Milner side-footed in the penalty in the 95th minute.

Kasper Schmeichel is beaten from the spot by James Milner, despite making several saves in normal time.

Having battled to haul themselves level with just 10 minutes to play, the Foxes were dealt a cruel blow in injury time after Marc Albrighton fouled Sadie Mané in the penalty box.

It was Liverpool skipper James Milner who stepped up to win it for the hosts, who made it eight victories in eight Premier League outings in 2019/20.

Kasper Schmeichel made a string of key saves for Leicester City on Merseyside.

Gerry Taggart told LCFC Radio: “I thought overall that everyone did a decent job. Nobody really stood out, but if I have to pick one player, then when called upon, he came up with the goods – and that’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

“Time and time again, he got his body in the way. Yes, he couldn’t do anything about the penalty, but he got in the right areas to save shot after shot, so I’ve got to give it to Kasper.”
