Following wins over Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Manchester City in Premier League 2, as well as a 2-1 success at Grimsby Town, the Foxes headed to Stadium of Light on Tuesday.

Knowing another victory would confirm their place as Northern Group A winners and a seal place in the knockout phase, City initially fell behind to a stunning Chris Maguire free-kick.

However, after the interval, the Club's youngsters hit back, first through a George Hirst penalty, before Dewsbury-Hall rattled in a rocket from the edge of the area.

Speaking to LCFC TV, the young midfielder said: "All the lads are absolutely buzzing in the changing room. We came into this game knowing this would probably be our toughest game of the group.

Dewsbury-Hall: A Big Statement

Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall reflects on a 2-1 win over Sunderland for Leicester City's Development Squad on Tuesday night.

"Sunderland are probably a Championship side to be honest. They’re looking to get promoted, so we’ve worked really hard in training and we’ve come into it on a great run of form.

"Towards the end of the game, they were playing their strongest team that they’d play week in, week out, so it’s a great testament to our young lads to come here and put on a great show.

"You can see how frustrated they got towards the end, they were really frustrated with how well we played, so to come here in their own back yard and beat them is a great feeling."

On his goal, Dewsbury-Hall added: "It was a good move and a great pass by Ade (Admiral Muskwe) to give me the ball and I just thought: ‘I need to get this out my feet and smash it!’ Luckily it went in!"

Now unbeaten in eight matches and victors in their last five outings, City have a three-week break from action before welcoming Derby County to Holmes Park on Monday 25 November (7pm GMT kick-off).

I think, as you’ve seen tonight, we’ve beat one of the best teams in the competition.

"We’re playing really, really well at the moment," he continued. "It was a bit of a sticky start, but we’ve sat down, worked it out, and figured out what we were doing wrong and we’ve put that right.

"It’s proved in the results. Five wins in a row is fantastic and especially two of those wins in the [Leasing.com Trophy] against men’s teams and three in the league... we just want to continue that now.

"It’s great momentum and we could go far I think if we carry on playing like we are. I think that’s a big statement. Not many people would think an [Under-21s] team would finish top of their group.

"Especially with teams like Sunderland in it, that’s a good statement of intent going into the next round. I think, as you’ve seen tonight, we’ve beat one of the best teams in the competition."
