The Fabric Of Leicester City: The Evolution Of Foxes Shirts

Throughout the years, especially those since replica kits came into fashion, Leicester City's shirts have become renowned as some of the most recognisable in England.

With a rich tapestry of colours over the years, especially where away shirts are concerned, the Football Club's most immediate expression of its identity has come in numerous guises.

Established in 1884, Leicester Fosse, the predecessor to Leicester City, in fact started life wearing all black kits, with a Cambridge blue sash across from the right shoulder.

Other combinations, including brown and sky blue halves, were experimented with over the years before the classic royal blue and white become traditional from the early 20th century.

Several away shirts through the years have included unique colour schemes, such as this from 1995/96.

In more recent times, meanwhile, the Club's home, away, and in some cases, third shirts have been emblazoned with sponsorship logos since Ind Coope's maiden deal in 1983.

Throughout the years since, seven companies have featured on Foxes shirts, while the logo of local hospice charity LOROS was also included to the away shirt in 2009/10.

In 1972/73, meanwhile, the Club experimented with white home shirts, inspired by Real Madrid, under the direction of manager Jimmy Bloomfield, but this lasted just one season.

This 2003-05 shirt featured the poppy for City's Remembrance Fixture in 2003, as Leicester became the first club to do so.

Ever since, Leicester City's primary colour has been royal blue, with several variations in hue alongside gold, white, yellow and even red trims, while shorts and sock colours have also varied greatly.

Currently, in 2019/20, the Club reverted to using white shorts for the first time since 2014 - the year of the 'Great Escape' - while adidas' iconic three-stripe branding features in metallic gold.

The newly-incorporated pink away shirt, meanwhile, has proven extremely popular with the Blue Army, quickly becoming one of the Club's best-selling shirts of all time.

Earlier this season, in LCFCQ, Club Historian John Hutchinson delved into the archives to uncover some of the reasons for this wide variety of Foxes shirts...
