Leicester's Comprehensive Away Display In Manchester

With a trip to Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City on the horizon for Leicester City on Boxing Day, LCFC.com takes a look back at a classic clash between the two sides.
More on this story...

Aside from last season's magnificent 5-2 victory over Pep Guardiola's men, Leicester have found it tough at the home of Man City in the 21st century, apart from one memorable away fixture that came during the 2003/04 season.

Leicester City pulled themselves out of the Premier League bottom three with a stunning 3-0 away victory over Manchester City in November 2003. While the Citizens were not the force they are today, Leicester, under Micky Adams, were already fighting for survival at the wrong end of the top flight table.

However, a comprehensive first away win of the season, and a second win on the bounce, was masterminded thanks to goals from Jordan Stewart, Paul Dickov and Marcus Bent.

Despite a strong start from the home side, with Joey Barton forcing a save out of Ian Walker, it was the Foxes who opened the scoring via Stewart's powerful strike just 12 minutes in. The midfielder was allowed time and space to move forward, managing to curl a shot into the net from 20 yards out.

Several chances came and went for Kevin Keegan's side before Sylvain Distin challenged Dickov in the penalty area. The former Man City striker dusted himself down to step up and slot the ball home seven minutes after the break.

The three points were wrapped up before the hour mark when Bent headed in Muzzy Izzet's pinpoint cross, giving the home side's debutant goalkeeper Kevin Stuhr-Ellegaard no chance.

At the other end, Nicolas Anelka continued to probe for a consolation but Leicester's defence was not to be beaten, maintaining a second consecutive clean sheet. The Foxes were relegated at the end of the season, while Manchester City would survive, finishing in 16th, eight points above the drop zone.

City: Walker; Scimeca, Howey, Thatcher, Impey; Izzet, McKinlay, Stewart, Scowcroft; Bent (Ferdinand 79'), Dickov (Hignett 86').

Subs not used: Coyne, Elliott, Gillespie.

Goals: Stewart 12', Dickov 53', Bent 58'
