The Foxes’ 10th Premier League win of the 2020/21 campaign came at St. James’ Park, where James Maddison and Youri Tielemans were on target to help their side move up to third in the table after 17 matches contested.

Andy Carroll came off the bench to halve the deficit for Steve Bruce’s side, but City defended resiliently in the latter stages to nullify Newcastle’s threat and secure all three points.

Northern Irishman Rodgers was particularly pleased with the Foxes’ ruthlessness in the 2-1 triumph, and credited his side for how they rounded off two swift attacks to ultimately seal the points.

“I thought it was a very good win,” Rodgers told LCFC TV at full-time. “It was always going to be a hard-fought, tough game, but I thought we came through it very well.

“In terms of a defensive perspective, we knew they were going to be hard to break down.

“We saw that during the week against Liverpool, but yes, we break away with that speed and quality and we finished both goals really well.”

They’ve got big players coming into the box, so you have to show your mettle and show that ability to dig deep, and the players did that, which was very pleasing.

Both Maddison and Tielemans produced fine finishes to find the back of the net, and Rodgers felt his outfit displayed character to repel Newcastle’s advances late on in the north east.

He added: “They were both very important strikes. You need to get the goal and that opened up the game a little bit. Once we got the first goal, we were able to do that.

“The game becomes a war. They’ve got big players coming into the box, so you have to show your mettle and show that ability to dig deep, and the players did that, which was very pleasing.”
