Heading into the match, the Danes had won three of their five fixtures at the tournament, last beating Czech Republic 2-1 to book their spot in the semi-finals of a competition they won in 1992.

Schmeichel, a star throughout the summer for his nation, played the full 120 minutes at Wembley Stadium, and made a number of key saves to keep England’s attacking line at bay, including a point-blank stop to turn away Raheem Sterling's close-range effort.

A stunning free-kick from Mikkel Damsgaard gave Schmeichel’s men the lead on the half-hour mark, before Simon Kjaer’s own goal levelled matters, and that’s the way it stayed in London until the 14th minute of extra-time.

After Sterling won a penalty, former Fox Harry Kane stepped up to take it, and was initially denied by Schmeichel from 12 yards, only for the striker to tuck in the rebound and win it for Gareth Southgate’s men.

While Denmark’s EURO 2020 campaign comes to an end, England will go on to play Italy in the final at Wembley on Sunday.

Schmeichel was one of six players to represent the Foxes at the tournament alongside Wales stopper Danny Ward, Turkey centre-back Çağlar Söyüncü and Belgium trio Youri Tielemans, Dennis Praet and Timothy Castagne, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering an injury against Russia.
