Schmeichel, who recently helped Denmark to three wins from four UEFA Nations League fixtures, made 53 appearances for the Foxes last term as Brendan Rodgers' men finished eighth in the Premier League. The 2022/23 season, meanwhile, begins at home to Brentford in early August.

After City's full fixture schedule was revealed on Thursday morning, the Leicester skipper outlined his anticipation for what lies ahead, previewed the test he expects Thomas Frank's Bees to pose and discussed the Club's wider ambitions heading into its ninth successive top-flight season.

“Opening weekend fixtures are always a really good test with both teams keen to start their seasons strongly, so it’s great for us to be able to kick off our season with a home game in front of our own supporters," Schmeichel said this week.

The journey this Football Club has been on in my time here has been incredible.

“Brentford are a difficult opponent, as they showed with an excellent first season in the Premier League, but regardless of the opposition, it’ll be about us trying to put into practice everything we will have worked so hard on in pre-season.”

Since joining City over a decade ago, shot-stopper Schmeichel has lifted the Premier League and Championship titles, as well as winning the FA Cup and Community Shield. He's also represented the Club in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

We have the talent and spirit to push on even further and I look forward to seeing what this team can do in the new season.

The 35-year-old, though, remains excited by what the future has in store for Leicester City.

He added: “The journey this Football Club has been on in my time here has been incredible and although last season didn’t always go our way due to several factors, we still made progress and we still showed that we have what it takes to compete at the higher end of the Premier League.

“We’ve got some challenging opening games against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, but we have the talent and spirit to push on even further and I look forward to seeing what this team can do in the new season.”
