Hughie & Freddie To Continue 100km Challenge At King Power Stadium

Fundraising best friends Hughie Higginson and Freddie Xavi will continue their epic 100km challenge to help children with cancer when Leicester City host Everton at King Power Stadium on Monday 1 May (8pm BST kick-off).

- Hughie and Freddie’s fundraising efforts to continue on Filbert Way on Monday evening
- The pair will run 1km around the King Power Stadium pitch during half-time
- They are aiming to run a total of 100km around each Premier League and EFL stadium
- Funds raised at the Everton game will go towards Leicester Hospitals Charity’s children’s oncology wards

The challenge, which the football loving pair have been taking on since 2022, sees them tour the UK together to run 1km around each Premier League and EFL stadium.

Their visit to Filbert Way will be the latest leg of their journey, as they run 1km around the pitch during half-time, with money raised on the night by supporters going towards Leicester Hospitals Charity’s children’s oncology wards.

Ahead of their run, Club Ambassador Alan Birchenall, said: “Hughie and Freddie are two very inspirational young boys, and their fundraising efforts so far have been nothing short of incredible.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming them to King Power Stadium, where I’m sure our brilliant supporters will give them a fantastic reception.”

Hughie was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukaemia) in 2020 and started urgent treatment at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Wanting to support his mate, best friend Freddie set himself a challenge of running 2km every day in the 50 days leading up to Christmas Day 2020 – finishing his challenge live on BBC Breakfast on Christmas Day morning.

Since then, the duo have received numerous awards, including the prestigious Pride of Britain award, and their fundraising efforts have captured the hearts of audiences, both locally and nationally, helping to propel their total to more than £230,000.

The boys, who are both from Burnley, started their challenge on Boxing Day in 2021 by running around their favourite stadium – Turf Moor.

Monday’s run will be their 25th to-date, having recently completed challenges at clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Walsall.

Hughie’s mum Katy said the aim is to raise a minimum of £1,000 for each of the 18 children’s oncology units dotted around the country.

She explained: “We want them to be able to buy Slush Puppies for the children. When the boys first started fundraising, that was the first thing they wanted to buy for the ward Hughie was on at Manchester Children’s Hospital.

“When he was first diagnosed and going through the worst of his treatment, Slush Puppies really helped to soothe his throat. Some children get bad ulcers from their chemotherapy and sometimes they just want something cool to drink.

“I know the boys are really looking forward to visiting Leicester City and are thrilled to be able to run at a Premier League club in front of thousands of fans.

“We are hoping to be able to bring some luck to the home team, but more importantly raise lots of money for Leicester Hospitals Charity.”
