Goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi sealed a 2-0 win at Pirelli Stadium to send the Foxes into the second round of the Carabao Cup. The three-time winners will travel to Tranmere Rovers later this week.

Maresca, who also oversaw the Sky Bet Championship opening-day success over Coventry City, was happy to watch his side dominate long spells of the match in Staffordshire.

Tonight, also for me, it was important to see the players that are playing less minutes, to see how they react and how they improve.

"It’s always good to win," the Italian said. "As we saw last night and tonight, many Championship clubs are out of the competition. It’s never easy, but we made it easy in the way we played. I’m very happy.

"The target in this moment – even if people struggle to believe me – is to see the team working day by day and improving game after game. Tonight, also for me, it was important to see the players that are playing less minutes, to see how they react and how they improve."

Midfielders scoring is becoming a feature of the new season for Leicester and Maresca hopes that trend continued.

"It’s fantastic for them," he added. "As I said many times, the only way to score goals for them is to arrive inside the box. Kiernan [Dewsbury-Hall] arrived many times. Wilfred [Ndidi] tonight, Dennis [Praet] too. They are key players for us."

There was a full debut for goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk in Burton, while Wanya Marçal-Madivadua made a second outing from the bench for the Club and his first start. That progress through the Academy ranks can inspire others, says Maresca.

"I’m very happy for them, for the Club and for the Academy," the Manager explained. "I think it’s important for all the Academy to see players joining the first team. It can give them more energy to continue and have a target to join us soon."
