After making 80 appearances for the Club, it was announced on Monday afternoon that the battling midfielder has penned fresh terms to keep her at Belvoir Drive until the summer of 2025.

Starting the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign with a win at Ashton Gate, the 24-year-old explained her excitement to sign on the dotted line and remain part of the project at Leicester City.

“I'm excited to sign a new contract,” Tierney stated. “It's something that I wanted to sort for a little while, and in terms of being a player, it gives me the focus.

"Since Willie [Kirk] has come in, I've played in a higher role, which has allowed me to work on different elements of my game. I think in previous years I've flicked between centre-half and a holding midfielder. So that's sort of been my bread and butter for most of my career.

Tierney has made 80 appearances during her time with Leicester.

"But I think the chance to learn something different since Willie's come in has given me the freedom to enjoy my football, not that I didn't before, but I think when you play higher, it’s good for me to see that area of my game develop.

"And I think that's something that I'm hoping I can continue working on under the Manager and here at Leicester so I can progress my game, because I still have a long way to go, even though I might feel old, I'm hopefully not too old.”

The new contract will see City's No.3 surpass her longest stint at any club in her career to date, but believes her confidence in still having so much to give to the Foxes made it the right choice to keep playing her football in the East Midlands.

An on-going development at City, Tierney has been involved in some crucial moments in the Club’s history, winning the Barclays Women’s Championship in 2021 before escaping relegation last season after overturning a ten-point deficit.

Now with three points already to their name, the midfielder commends the work being done to Willie and his backroom staff to head in the right direction, and states his coaching inspires her to become a better player.

Tierney Motivated To Progress At LCFC

Hear the thoughts of Sam Tierney and Willie Kirk following the signing of her new contract at LCFC Women.

She continued: “In terms of being a player, I'm not really one that wants to continuously move on all the time until I feel like I've given everything that I can. I think that's something I can still do here.

“As the team develops in terms of the Club’s progress and the ambitions it's got, such as the signings that we have made this summer, I think it proves to me that I can still progress a lot more, and I can still give more to Leicester.

“I've gone through so many different processes through the Championship year, where we won a lot and everything seemed great, to then get the opportunity to play in the Super League again is amazing.

“Now every opportunity I'm getting to learn makes me a better player. So I think that's a big thing for me and hopefully under the direction of the manager and obviously the new staff that have come in, I think you would hopefully see that I am a player that wants to keep learning.

“Even though it might seem that I get frustrated at myself a lot because I want everything to be perfect, ultimately, that's why I'm here, to play football, so we'll see how I get on.”
