After initially being frustrated early on, the Foxes broke through in the latter stages, with Vardy's close-range finish in the 76th minute being added to by a 95th-minute penalty after goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann's red card.

It's a result which keeps Enzo Maresca's men top of the Sky Bet Championship standings and ends a two-game losing run before the international break. City have won 14 of their 17 matches so far in the 2023/24 campaign.

"It’s definitely important," Vardy said afterwards. "We had the chance to reset after the international break. We’ve been working hard on the training field with the lads who were not on international duty and everyone’s come back.

Vardy Seals Watford Victory

Jamie Vardy nets twice as Leicester City return to winning ways with a 2-0 success over Watford.

"They know what’s been happening in training and put that into work on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. I think, overall, it was a very good performance today."

On adding his sixth and seventh goals of the season, Vardy added: "I managed to get two. I could have had four to be honest, especially with the volley. I think the centre-back’s just got a flick on it.

"Trying to readjust had put me in a bit of an awkward position, but the main thing is we’ve got the three points. As you saw, with how we played, we maintained the ball and kept on the attack. I think that suited us perfectly today."

Vardy's penalty saw him take on centre-back Ryan Porteous in the net, after Watford had used all their subs before Bachmann's dismissal. The No.9 admitted it was a turn of events which he had to manage when he stepped up from 12 yards.

"I think that’s my first one [against an outfield player]," he explained. "In my head, I thought, as a player, he’s probably going to think I’m just going to blast it straight down the middle. It was just put to the side and he’s stood and tried gambling late on. It’s gone in the back of the net and that’s all that matters."
