City concluded last year in brilliant fashion, with a 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Friday evening, and that impressive form carried on to the New Year, defeating Huddersfield on home soil.

As a hectic festive schedule comes to a close, finally allowing some breathing space, Maresca was proud of his team’s resilience to keep going and come out the other end with a 10-point gap to second-placed Ipswich Town in the Sky Bet Championship.

“I’m very happy because it’s always difficult to win games,” the Manager stated. “We saw that in Cardiff, where we struggled, then the second half was much better.

Starting 2024 with a win.

“After we scored the third goal today, we dropped a little bit but this is expected after playing our third game in quick succession, so it’s normal.

“Sometimes we struggle because the opponent makes it difficult to play our way of football; when they have 11 players on the edge of the box, it’s difficult to find the space and break them down.”

Tom Cannon, who was called into the XI for his first start, scored twice with a goal in either half, and the Italian Manager was delighted with the instant impact of the former Everton forward, as well as two other young signings that came into the Club on loan last summer.

“Yunus [Akgün] and Cesare [Casadei] both did very good,” Maresca continued. “It’s not easy to come on when the Manager gives you the chance and you need time, but I’m happy for both.

“Tom [Cannon] deserves it. He joined the Club, and was injured for two or three months, so it was not an easy moment but happy for him tonight. He is still very young and can improve many things, as can we as a team. But as I said, I’m happy for Tom.”

The former Manchester City coach is looking forward to a well-earned break before returning to training later this week for the Emirates FA Cup clash against Millwall in the capital, and went on to speak about the Foxes' involvement with the upcoming international tournaments.

The Manager confirmed Patson Daka has reported for AFCON duty with Zambia while Harry Souttar has also joined up with Australia for the Asia Cup. Abdul Fatawu, meanwhile, has not been selected by Ghana.

Maresca said: “Kelechi [Iheanacho] and Wilfred [Ndidi] are both currently injured, but they are going to go with the international team, we will see if Nigeria want to include them or send them back as I said, they both have an injury at the moment. Patson [Daka] and Harry [Souttar] are already with their international teams.

“As a group, we now have two days off which is the most important thing after what we’ve had, before going Thursday again to prepare for Millwall in the FA Cup."
