During Thursday’s press conference at Belvoir Drive, Leitzig discussed the 2023/24 season and gaining confidence towards the start of the term, admitting that a lack of consistency has led to a lower-than-expected league position.

Talking about a historic semi-final in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, the German shot-stopper has many happy memories in her time so far in a Leicester shirt but is happiest when she can work hard for her teammates.

The 'keeper talked about the importance of staying positive.

“I think we started really well with the win (against Bristol City) and then the draw against Manchester United,” Leitzig voiced. “We were leading 2-0 against Arsenal which means we can compete at the highest level; we just need to have the consistency.

“The highlight for sure was the semi-final of the FA Cup where we made history by getting there, and we got so close to getting to the final. Around Christmas it was a hard time for us, but we stuck together and managed to get through it.

“I remember my first home game (against Brighton & Hove Albion) because I was so excited to play at King Power Stadium and I kept a clean sheet also.

“More recently, I really enjoyed the game against Manchester United because after an injury, it was nice to come back to the King Power Stadium and I thought we did well but were unlucky with the result.”

It’s important for us to get the three points and end the season on a high.

Making 17 appearances this season, the former Bayern Munich ‘keeper was forced to watch from the sidelines in recent months as she recovered from a shoulder injury, but is happy to finally be back and fighting for her space with the talented Lize Kop.

“We have tough competition for who starts in goal which is good because it pushes both of us to improve,” she continued. “I always want to help the team with my performances on the pitch.

“The injury was my first real injury where I was out for a long period, and I tried to get back as quick as possible; it was probably longer than I hoped but I’m happy to be back with the team.

“You always need to look for the positives during your time being injured, but I’d have to say, I don’t think it’s been a case of coming back stronger, I’m just pleased I’m through it and back playing again.”

'Happy To Be Back With The Team'

Janina Leitzig discusses her return from injury and the upcoming Liverpool test in Thursday's press conference at Belvoir Drive.

One game remains for Leicester as they take on Liverpool in a final outing at King Power Stadium, and although their opponents reside in a higher league position, previous meetings against the Reds fills the 25-year-old with confidence.

Leitzig added: “Everyone is taking it really seriously because we’ve been so close and deserved to win a lot of times and be higher up in the table because of the quality in the team.

“So, it’s important that to have confidence this weekend. When you look at the table, there is quite a difference in points, but we have beaten them twice this season already so we know we can compete. It’s important for us to get the three points and end the season on a high.”
