First League Away Win Of The Season For City

Securing their fourth-straight victory in all competitions, Craig Shakespeare was forced into making one change to the side that defeated Sevilla on Tuesday, as Yohan Benalouane - superb on his first Premier League start for the Club - replaced Wes Morgan, who missed out due to a back injury. 

The City boss spoke of just how effective his side can be when on the front foot prior to the clash and it was that exact style of play which saw them race into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes in the capital. 

The Foxes’ first goal came from Riyad Mahrez, who saw his cross from the right wing avoid everybody before finding its way past Hammers stopper Darren Randolph with just five minutes gone. 

Two minutes later, City doubled their lead and it was Robert Huth who was on hand to head home a sublime cross from Marc Albrighton, who found the German with the outside of his right boot. 

Slaven Bilic’s men replied shortly after through a well-taken Manuel Lanzini free kick, but the visiting side restored their lead with six minutes of the first period to play following Jamie Vardy’s close-range finish. 

Andre Ayew then pulled one back for West Ham just after the hour mark by nodding in Andy Carroll’s knock-down to set up a tense final 30 minutes for the men in blue. 

Opportunities to level followed through Carroll, who on 77 minutes had an effort palmed off the line by Kasper Schmeichel, before the Denmark international made a sensational point-blank save in the second minute of injury time to help earn all three points for the Foxes. 

Major moment 

Coming to the rescue to save a penalty against Sevilla, Kasper Schmeichel was again in fine form on Saturday afternoon to pull off one of his most important stops of the 2016/17 campaign. 

An away win in the Premier League had eluded the Foxes up until the clash with West Ham and it may have continued to do so if Schmeichel hadn’t been at his best to deny Andy Carroll one-on-one in the dying moments of the game. 

Who impressed?

After playing a role in both goals against Sevilla, Riyad Mahrez carried his fine form into Saturday’s game, grabbing the crucial opener to break the deadlock and set City on their way. 

An intelligent combination between the Algerian and Marc Albrighton then saw the latter set up Robert Huth shortly after, while Mahrez’s corner in the lead up to Jamie Vardy’s strike meant he was involved in all three of City’s efforts against the Hammers. 

Where do we stand? 

A fourth win on the spin in the Premier League means Leicester City are currently six points above the bottom three and just three points away from 10th-placed Southampton, who play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
