Leicester City’s 2017/18 pre-season schedule continues to take shape with the announcement of a friendly fixture against German Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach at King Power Stadium.

The match will take place under the lights in front of the home faithful on Friday 4 August (KO 7:45pm), just over a week ahead of the curtain raiser for the new Premier League campaign.

Craig Shakespeare’s men tackle the talented German outfit after a series of away trips to Luton Town, MK Dons, Wolves and Burton Albion as the players bid to stake their claim for a starting spot on the opening weekend.

Like the Foxes, Borussia Mönchengladbach competed in last season’s UEFA Champions League, where they finished third in Group C behind Barcelona and Manchester City, but ahead of Scottish champions Celtic.

That third place ensured entry to the Europa League, where they eliminated Italian side Fiorentina before bowing out of the competition on away goals following a 3-3 draw with fellow Germans Schalke 04 at the Round of 16 stage.

On the domestic front, the west German outfit ended the 2016/17 in ninth position, but remained in the hunt for European qualification until the final games of the campaign, which ended with a 2-2 home draw against SV Darmstadt.

Borussia are a side with plenty of history, having lifted the Bundesliga title on five separate occasions during their golden era in the 1970s. They also finished as runners-up to Liverpool in the 1977 European Cup, while they reached four UEFA Cup finals during the same decade, winning two. Former Fox Kasey Keller played in goal for the team from 2005-2007.

It’s not the first time that Borussia Mönchengladbach have visited the city of Leicester, having done so previously on 6 August 1992. The Foxes were managed by Brian Little at the time, heading into a season that would ultimately see them clinch promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. The visitors ran out 3-1 victors on that day however, with local Leicester lad Richard Smith getting the only goal.

A Leicester City side also visited Germany to play Borussia Mönchengladbach on the exact same date 26 years earlier. The fixture was played at the team’s former ground, Bökelbergstadion, known as ‘the gravel pit’. City won 3-0 with goals from Mike Stringfellow, Bobby Roberts and Jackie Sinclair – the match coming just seven days after England’s 1966 World Cup victory over Germany at Wembley.
