Internationals: Schmeichel Features In Denmark Win
Schmeichel, 27, marshalled his defence with authority in the first period as the Danes kept a Swedish attack including Paris Saint Germain superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic largely quiet, though the Foxes stopper was called into action to deny recent Arsenal loanee Kim Kallstrom.
City’s No.1 had a busier second half, producing fine saves to deny Kallstrom and strike partner Marcus Berg, before a late penalty from Liverpool’s Daniel Agger gave Denmark their reward for an impressive team display.
Meanwhile, City Academy graduate Liam Moore was an unused substitute as England Under-20s drew 1-1 with Korea Republic in their latest game at the Toulon tournament in France.
Having started in both previous matches for Gareth Southgate’s side – a 3-0 win over Qatar and a 2-1 defeat to Brazil – the Foxes defender was among several players rotated for the Three Lions’ third game of the tournament.
Southgate’s side took a third-minute lead through Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow, but Chang Min Lee’s second-half equaliser denied them a victory in their penultimate group match.
With Brazil having already won Group B and advanced to the final, England now need to avoid defeat in their final group match against Colombia on Friday to ensure they progress to Sunday’s third-placed play-off.
