Ghana Experience Beneficial For Schlupp
For Schlupp, his season ended with a call-up to the Ghana national side ahead of the summer’s World Cup in Brazil, but despite winning a second international cap in a friendly against the Netherlands, the German-born just missed out on the final 23-man squad for the finals.
Reflecting back on his time with the squad, Schlupp told LCFC.com: “I had a great experience with Ghana and I was in the provisional squad for the World Cup.
“I didn’t make the tournament unfortunately but it was a great learning curve. There are still many more World Cups to come so hopefully I can make one in my career.
“I spoke to the [Ghana] manager a couple of days ago about the African Cup of Nations qualifiers coming up that I could be involved in.”
Although Schlupp didn’t head out to Brazil, he’s clearly happy to bank the experience he did gain and use it as he prepares to fight his way into the side for Leicester City’s Premier League campaign, starting in August.
Schlupp first signed for the Foxes during their most recent top-flight season in 2003/04, so the excitement is certainly building at the prospect of representing the Club in one of the toughest leagues in the world himself.
The Foxes face Everton in Thailand later this month before opening the season against the same opposition on 16 August, but despite the prospect of playing such big names, Schlupp isn’t fazed.
He added: “It will be a good experience to play against a side as big as Everton in a friendly first. I think it’s a positive, we can see what they’re like in Thailand first, but the first game of the season will be much different.
At least we’ll get a good insight to their playing style and personnel. “All the teams in the Premier League are quality, but to have three of the top four in the first six games won’t be easy, but none of the games in the Premier League will be easy.
“It will be a good way to stamp our authority and show everyone else in the league what we can do by getting some points on the board hopefully.”
