Shakespeare: Worthy Winners

With a further nine Foxes players getting a full 90 minutes under their belts, as well as two goals for summer signing Leo Ulloa, there was plenty to be positive about after what was City’s penultimate pre-season game.

Ulloa’s first half brace set City on the road to victory, and although Kieran Agard pulled one back for the Millers, Danny Drinkwater made certain of the win with a fine second half goal of his own – ensuring Leicester’s unbeaten pre-season campaign rumbles on.

Afterwards, a satisfied Craig Shakespeare told LCFC.com: “I thought it was a very good test for us. You could see from the start of the game their intent [was to attack]. They play a high pressing game and try to force you into areas.

“When they went direct they got good regain possession too, so it was a real good game for us and a good test. I thought we came through it very well. In any match, the opposition, especially the home team, will have possession, and we weathered the storm at times.

“I also thought we played some very good football. It’s always pleasing to score three goals. It’s nice for our new player Leo to get a brace and that won’t do his confidence any harm. All in all we were worthy winners, but they gave us a good test.

“We’ve picked some good surfaces to play on this pre-season, but also good opposition as well. When you think of MK Dons, they’re renowned for playing good football and Rotherham have come up through the leagues and you can see why.”

The only concern for City was the sight of Frenchman Anthony Knockaert hobbling off during the second half, but Shakespeare is hopeful that the winger will be back in action again shortly.

He said: “We’re still assessing Anthony. It appears to be an ankle knock, but we’ve caught it at the right time by taking him off early and putting some ice on his ankle, so we’ll know more in 24 hours.

“But knowing Anthony he’s very keen and doesn’t like to spend a lot of time on that treatment table, so hopefully he’ll be back training on Thursday or Friday.”
