Vardy: I’m Over The Moon

Fresh from putting pen-to-paper on a brand new four-year contract, Jamie Vardy insisted he can’t wait to get stuck into life as a Barclays Premier League striker.
The 27-year-old, who was a 2012 signing from non-league Fleetwood Town, is heading into the new campaign full of confidence on the back of a quite astonishing 2013/14 season.

Alongside David Nugent he plundered 16 goals in all competitions as well as winning seven of City’s 15 penalties – firmly establishing himself as a fan favourite and a key component of City’s front line.

Sheffield-born Vardy was playing his football at Stocksbridge Park Steels as recently as four years ago, so to be on the cusp of a Premier League debut having is a quite remarkable achievement.

“I’m over the moon,” Vardy told Foxes Player after signing his contract. “We all know that the Club wants to keep improving and stay in the Premier League, and I definitely want to be a part of that.

“Obviously everyone knows about the route I’ve taken to come back into football and the way I’ve gone about it. We managed to get promoted last year, but now it’s important that we stay there.”

Vardy himself accepts that there has been a huge transformation in his game since his arrival from non-league, and says that the faith shown in him by the manager was a significant factor in him signing a new deal.

The striker added: “He (Nigel Pearson) brought me here for the start of it all and he wants the Club to maintain its Premier League status too. He was a big influence and I just need to repay him now on the field.

“I think I was a bit raw when I first signed from non-league. I’ve had to adapt physically and fitness-wise, and getting the positioning right, and hopefully I can continue that this season.

“Obviously the season before last wasn’t the best, and I was struggling a bit. I went away and did bits of stuff on my own, came back fighting fit and hit the ground running.

“At the end of the day it’s all down to your own ability. I’ll be doing my utmost to get at the defenders and score as many goals as I can for Leicester City in the Premier League.

“I think I’ll take a moment when we go out warming up, and I’ll take a look at the size of the stadiums and the atmosphere that will be there, but as soon as the whistle goes to start the game, that’s when it’s all down to business.”
