Pearson Lauds City Comeback

Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson credited the response of his players after they twice came from two goals down to beat Manchester United 5-3 at King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Early goals from Robin Van Persie and Angel Di Maria looked set to sink the Foxes but Leonardo Ulloa pulled one back to make it 2-1.
Another goal for United, this time from Ander Herrera, restored their two-goal advantage but penalties from David Nugent and Ulloa and finishes from Esteban Cambiasso and Jamie Vardy handed Leicester the points in an eight goal thriller.
And Pearson, who also credited his front line for their ruthlessness, recognised his side’s remarkable attitude to come back from a deficit against such a talented team.
Speaking after the victory, Pearson said: “In all honesty I thought it would be a tighter affair in terms of the number of goals scored but to win a game when you’ve been 2-0 behind and 3-1 behind is a testament to the ability that we have and also the desire to believe in the spirit that we have as well.
“It’s been a really satisfying day – one from which the players can take a lot of pride in their performance.
“We’ve made changes today and we’ve made changes because we felt that we needed to give ourselves the best chance of winning the game.
“To respond quickly is always going to be important – I did feel that when we scored they took the initiative and then when they scored we took the initiative.
“We weren’t too pleased with the build up to their first two goals in particular but I did think we scored a really good goal after that and to keep putting them under pressure when it would be easy to fold is testament to the spirit that we have.”
And after registering their second win on the bounce, the Foxes manager highlighted the ability of his squad to produce results in such tough circumstances.
He continued: “You can’t underplay the significance of the quality that we have in the squad as well.
“In the five games that we’ve played we’ve proved to ourselves as much as anybody else that we have quality to perform at this level.
“It’s always going to be the challenge whether you can reproduce that week in, week out.
“So far our level of performance has been pretty good.
“I still believe we can get better but when you look at the opening five games, and everybody wants to remind me of what they look like on paper, I think we’ve probably achieved more than most people, and probably ourselves, would have imagined that we could.
“The challenge now is to go on from this.”
Fielding a forward line consisting of Jamie Vardy, Nugent and Ulloa proved to be an effective one, with all three frontmen finding the back of the net.
And satisfied with their work, Pearson added: “It’s nice to have three strikers scoring today as well – Leo to get another two – his all-round game I’m really pleased with but for him to continue to score is important.
“For Nuge to get off the mark is important and for Vards I thought his goal is just reward for the sort of performance he put in.
“Whenever you’ve got pace in your side, no matter who you play against, is potential for causing people problems and we’ve certainly done that throughout the game today.
“I’m really pleased with how we played and the result is a huge bonus for us.”
