Schmeichel: Go For The Jugular

Kasper Schmeichel has urged Leicester City to start on the front foot when they travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawthorns is the venue as Nigel Pearson’s side look to mount a late charge for survival and build on a morale-boosting 2-1 win over West Ham United last weekend.

Esteban Cambiasso and Andy King scored the goals on that day, which marked the first time the Foxes had taken the lead in a league match since a 1-0 success over Aston Villa back on 10 January.

The manager called for more of the same after the victory, and Schmeichel was quick to echo those sentiments himself. “It’s the approach in every game,” he told Foxes Player on the subject of making a strong start to matches. “It’s what we look for, it’s not always the case that we’ve been able to do it but that’s the case in every game – you want to have a good start and preferably take the lead.

“I think we can take positives out of the fact that nearly every game we’ve played we’ve been in. There are only a few games where we’ve been completely outplayed. We’ve had a chance in most games to get something out of it, but we just haven’t done it.

“At the moment we’re bottom and we obviously have a bit to lose, but maybe not as much as the teams that were a bit safer and are getting sucked into it.

“We go into every game positive and like the gaffer said after the game, it’s in our hands. As long as it is in our hands, we stay positive and I’ll keep fighting.”

While teams outside the relegation zone may see a point against the Foxes as a positive result, Schmeichel knows full well that only victories will do for City, and the sooner they come, the better.

He said: “We need points. We need three points. One point is okay, but it’s not quite enough for us at the moment in the position that we’re in. We’ve got to go for wins now, we’ve got to go for the jugular and we’ve got to make sure that we go for three points.

“After the West Ham win, the mood is better after a win, but we’re not getting carried away with ourselves. We’re still bottom of the league but we’ve made a good start to the last eight or so games and we’re very focused. We’re hoping this Saturday we can carry on that form and get a good three points at West Brom.”
