It was a night to remember for Jamie Vardy on Saturday as he made his full international debut to help England seal their spot in Euro 2016 with a thumping 6-0 win over San Marino.

The Leicester City striker made his first appearance for England as a substitute in a 0-0 friendly draw against the Republic of Ireland earlier this summer but found himself wearing the no.9 shirt from the start against San Marino.

On a tough playing surface, Vardy played the full 90 minutes for Roy Hodgson's side and was bidding to become the first City player since Gary Lineker in 1985 to score for England. The goal didn't arrive in the end, but the City man worked tirelessly on his full debut and will hope to open his account against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday night.

Vardy's strike partner Wayne Rooney was the man who grabbed the headlines when he tucked away a first half penalty to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing England scoring record of 49 goals.

Christian Brolli then put beyond his own ‘keeper to make it 2-0 at the break before Everton’s Ross Barkley fired in early into the second 45 minutes to give England a comfortable three-goal cushion.

Vardy played a role in England’s fourth goal on the night, flicking the ball on for Fabian Delph to pick out an unmarked Theo Walcott at the far post. The Arsenal man finished well at close range and all but assured England of the three points.

The scoring wasn’t over however, as Jonjo Shelvey picked out the run of Harry Kane, who lifted the ball over the goalkeeper for 5-0 before Walcott added another with just over 10 minutes left on the clock.

The result maintains England’s 100 per cent record in Group E, with their seven wins from seven games giving them an unassailable lead over third-placed Slovenia in the table.

Over in Group G, a Christian Fuchs skippered Austria put themselves within touching distance of qualification with a 1-0 victory at home to Moldova.

The City man played 90 minutes for the Austrians as they won 1-0 courtesy of a Zlatko Junuzovic strike to move onto 19 points from seven games. That leaves them eight points clear of third-placed Russia with only nine more points to play for.

Two goals in three minutes had the Swiss staring defeat in the face, but strikes from Josip Drmic (2) and Valentin Stocker inside the final 10 minutes kept them in second place behind England with a five point cushion over third.

City defender Jeffrey Schlupp got a late run-out for Ghana in their 1-0 win away to Rwanda in Kigali, coming on as a substitute in second half stoppage time to replace AFC Bournemouth winger Christian Atsu.

The winning goal came shortly before that when Mubarak Wakaso curled an excellent free kick around the Rwanda wall on 88 minutes, handing Ghana all three points.

The result maintains Ghana's 100 per cent record of two wins from two games in 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification Group H.

The playing schedule for Ghana in the group will resume in March 2016, when they tackle Mozambique.

Also on the England front, City youngster Ben Chilwell took the captain’s armband for England Under-20s in an impressive 5-0 victory over the Czech Republic at St George’s Park.

It was an afternoon to remember for the left sided defender, who after Tyler Walker had given the team a 2-0 lead, added a third when his cross found its way over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Birmingham City winger Demarai Gray added a fourth after the break before team-mate Reece Brown rounded off the scoring on the hour mark.
