Vardy: It's My Best, No Shadow Of A Doubt

While Leicester City fans try to work out whether there’s ever been a better goal scored at King Power Stadium, Jamie Vardy was in no doubt that Tuesday night’s wonder goal was his best-ever.

The England striker rattled a stunning half volley into the top corner before adding a second during City’s 2-0 Barclays Premier League victory over Liverpool.

With that three points, the Foxes maintained a three-point gap at the top of the Premier League table ahead of Saturday’s opponents Manchester City while opening up a five-point gap to Arsenal in third.

It was Vardy’s first strike that sent the internet into meltdown, but it wasn’t just a hit and hope effort as he struck a stunning dipping effort over Simon Mignolet, who had earlier pulled off a string of fine saves.

Vardy explained: “I’d seen him (Mignolet) all game and kept having a look up and he was always on the edge of his box. When I was put through by Riyad [Mahrez] I was wide and didn’t have any support so I just hit it and hoped he was off his line. Luckily it nestled into the top corner.

“It’s my best, no shadow of a doubt. I just hope there’s more of them to come.”

While his first goal will steal the headlines, there was plenty to be admired about his second goal too – his 18th Premier League strike of the campaign.

He added: “Shinji [Okazaki] got into space and he’s took a shot on, which anyone would do, and luckily for me it’s deflected off their centre half and gone straight into my path.

“I’ve slotted it across the ‘keeper into the roof of the net because he was coming out quite quick.” Liverpool are one of only two teams to defeat the Foxes this season, courtesy of a 1-0 result at Anfield on Boxing Day, and Vardy admits that there were lessons learned from that fixture.

“We looked at videos of how we played at their place and we all knew that it wasn’t good enough,” said Vardy. “They were pressing us as a team and we were getting caught on the ball too much.

“If you look at tonight, obviously they had chances but we did as well and we’ve put them under the cosh a lot more, and that’s been proven with us getting the goals and the points.

“Obviously you’ve seen how we were pressing again as a team and we’ve put them under a lot of pressure that they weren’t expecting and we’ve come away with three points.

“I think it just shows how good we are personally in terms of fitness levels and that we’ll always play until the 95th minute if we have to. “I’ve got no problems now [after a minor groin operation] so as each game comes they’re only going to get better and stronger, so hopefully I’ll be able to get through the season with no more niggles!”
